ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Sonic Explorers is a creatively spirited and musically diverse instrumental ensemble whose repertoire focuses on the original compositions & arrangements of trumpeter & leader, Jerry Sabatini, who comes from the Contemporary Improvisation (originally known as Third Stream) program at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA.

Since 1995 Sonic Explorer's music has been driven by some of the finest musicians in the Boston area. Characterized by sensational improvisations bursting out from tight, well-crafted arrangements, Sonic Explorers soar without limits and have defined a unique and personalized sound that is unmistakably all their own. Among their influences are: Miles Davis, Sun Ra, Frank Zappa, Balkan and Greek brass bands, North Indian Hindustani music, Turkish makams, Argentinean tangos, and Thrash Metal.

As of the release of the "American Gypsy" album (2013 Nada Brahma Records), Sonic Explorers' personnel is:
Jerry Sabatini (trpt, flg), Chris Veilleux (alto, sop saxes), Jonathan Lorentz (ten sax), Todd Brunel (clr, bass clr), Phil Sargent (gtr), John Funkhouser (pno, keys), Greg Loughman (acoustic bass), Mike Connors (drums). These players are among some of the hardest working and finest improvising musicians in the Boston jazz and improvisation scene today. They have also been playing together in countless diverse projects as leaders and sidemen for over 15 years. As a result, Sonic Explorers have a maturity, a unique sound and a synergy that places them among the greatest bands performing today! These musicians truly love their work, love to play together, and perform with deep conviction and joy. Listen to these tracks and you will hear all that for yourself.
