Change is never easy, especially when it happens so suddenly, and so swiftly. SOM has seen many additions to their lineup, but no departure during our years together. Then in 2013 two founding members (Jason Hohl and Jereb Scott) and one new member (Amber Scott) departed. The friendships we made remained intact, but we, the remaining members were left standing asking ourselves, now what? It was out of that question, Chapter was born.
What started out as jam sessions around kitchen tables has grown to a strong live band that performs around the Pacific Northwest, and a well received album to our name. With the new EP, Chapter, we embrace the old band, while welcoming the new direction that always comes with change. Old members and new are featured on this release with songs that both showcase our old style and, without looking back, some new directions as well.
SOM has always been a band that has a strong love of the traditional (trad), but we also love the modern elements as well. Our interpretation of Ye Jacobites, the first track on our new release cannot possibly say that more. It’s a risky move putting something so different then we have ever done right at the start, but we ask that you give it a chance.
So now what? As one of our old members has said time and again, “we’re friends first, and a band second.” With that we turn the page on a chapter in our history together, happy and grateful for what happened, but looking forward to what’s next. - Josh Curll, Sons of Malarkey
