Album Notes
Sony Holland is a warm, inviting performer who has traveled the world making music. In concert Sony presents material from the most beloved composers of our time. Along with timeless jazz standards and classic bossa novas you will be treated to some unique covers and originals, artfully blended into a captivating mix of emotions, melodies and rhythms. Sony's elegant voice and unassuming style has been polished through hundreds of performances in every imaginable setting... from her early days busking at Pier 39 to starring on the Venetian Room stage. Sony and her band play in top jazz venues from the Blue Note in New York City to Herb Alpert's Vibrato in the hills of Los Angeles and the stunning new SF Jazz Center.

For this new collection Sony and her guitarist/husband, Jerry Holland, set out to capture the intimate sound of their rehearsals in a friends magnificent kitchen. Built into a steep hillside in San Francisco, the kitchen sits on the ground floor of a spacious atrium. A spiral staircase leads up several flights to the starry skylights above. With microphones and cameras strategically placed the duo ran through a soothing set of classics and originals. The result is this beautiful collection, Kitchen Sessions. Review of Sony's previous CD:

Jazz singer-songwriter Sony Holland’s irresistible ‘Soft Power’
By Paul Liberatore, Marin Independent Journal

On “Take a Deep Breath,” one of the original songs on her new album, “Soft Power,” jazz singer-songwriter Sony Holland wonders “what good is life if you’re worried to death?”

A good question, and one way to put your worries on hold would be to chill out, lay back and listen to this mellow mix of tasteful covers, tuneful originals and classics from the Great American Songbook.

Backed by a spare jazz trio — bassist Dan Feiszli, drummer David Rokeach and the flawless guitar work of her husband, Jerry — she sets her sensual voice in intimate arrangements of intelligently selected covers of Bob Dylan’s “All I Really Want to Do,” Bruce Springsteen’s poignant “Streets of Philadelphia” and Joni Mitchell’s intoxicating “A Case of You.”

She takes a big chance lacing six of her originals among brilliant tunes by those all-time greats, but her songs more than hold their own. Tracks like “Best Defense” and “Song of the Year” and “L.A. of My Dreams” sound sweet and fresh and smart, like they belong in that rarified company.

She brings her same coolly passionate approach to standards like “Time After Time” and the too-often covered Henry Mancini war horse “Moon River.”

With “Soft Power,” Holland makes easy listening very hard to resist.

Sheer Excellence
There are many aspects to this album that stand out . One of them is the intimacy of the guitar and vocals, which I love. You can hear each note and each word . They meld into a collaboration of sheer excellence. The messages of each original tune are profound and inspirational. The songs portray life and love in a day to day setting. Songs like Not Ready to Say Goodbye and Now are brilliantly written and composed. The original tunes combined with the beautifully selected covers such ad Evergreen and Besame Mucho give this Album a soulful style with some awesome Latin vibes which I truly enjoy. The vocals are second to none and offer sheer eloquence for the music lover. This recording is truly a treasure.
