ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Soul-R Fusion is Tim Koehler and Alex Goodell. The duo has been making music in Wilmington N.C. for the last 3 years and quickly earned a reputation for passionate vocals and melodic fretless bass playing.
Soul-R Fusion is Blues, Soul, Americana , Folk and Roots music at its best and all rolled into one acoustic package.
The songs on this CD are from the written from the heart and Played from the soul.

Alex Goodell - Fretless Bass
Tim Koehler - Acoustic Guitar, Vocals, and Harmonica

We first met in August 2014 at a benefit gig We were each impressed by the others’ playing, but we did not meet again until spring of 2015 when we both, along with drummer Roger Manning, wound up working on a studio project for a mutual friend. When that project was finishing the three of us started working together on some of Tim’s original music. We recorded what became the “Soul-R Fusion” CD, which we finished towards the end of 2016. Since then we’ve been writing and playing as an acoustic guitar / bass duo and we shifted the sound and direction a bit.

Soul-R Fusion focuses on the interplay between Tim’s rich vocals and rhythmic acoustic guitar and Alex’s melodic bass playing. The music that Soul-R Fusion creates has a kind of rhythmic and soulful singer songwriter vibe. We want the lyrics to be a focus, but the music isn’t just the usual guy with guitar strumming thing, it has to move people as well. So what we hope to end up with is lyrics that can uplift or make you think and rhythms that keep your feet tapping.
Together we spend a great deal of time working on our rhythms and the arrangements of our originals and even the cover songs we perform. The flavors that we bring to the sound and our influences vary widely, from soul or blues like Gladys Knight, Willie Dixon, or Van Morrison, to rock and folk like The Band. But we keep the thoughtful words of singer-songwriters like Cat Stevens or Bob Dylan. Then we throw some good old fashion funky acoustic rhythm on top of the whole thing.
We are both northern transplants and have been here in the Wilmington area for a while. - Tim about 17 years and Alex about 7 years.
Alex is from Northern New Jersey but has also lived in Washington DC, California, and Washington State.
Tim is from New York but has also lived in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Virginia and Tennessee.

Our musical history:
Tim – I started in rock and roll bands in high school, and had a few successful cover/bar bands in New Jersey, but then I fell for acoustic singer-songwriter type music, like Cat Stevens and James Taylor, and storytellers like Harry Chapin and Arlo Guthrie. I spent a lot more time playing solo acoustic in bars and clubs after that then I did in bands.

Alex - I have worked in a variety of bands including classic rock, Elvis tribute, surf-instro, funk, and country-rock. Although I started playing fretless bass early on, I had taken a break from it playing mostly fretted bass, and it wasn’t until I started working with Tim that I picked up the fretless again. Playing fretless gives me a sense of musical freedom and it enables me to play more expressively and melodically, which works well in Soul-R Fusion because Tim has a very rhythmic guitar style and this frees me up to play melodic bass lines. Often, in addition to laying down a groove, I play counter or co-melodies to his vocals.
