Album Notes
Special Strength is the newest project from performance artist singer songwriter Pam Howe. Pam Howe is an American singer/songwriter/poet/MC born in Kingsport, TN. In Atlanta, GA in the 1990s, Howe was part of the early Cabbagetown scene and began performing at The White Dot for An Evening With The Garbage Man. And at the infamous Mudshack scene which spawned The Jody Grind and Opal Foxx Quartet. She formed the pop art avant bossa nova group Cicada Sings. She played guitar and sang on their full-length record “Lousy Private Fuzz” (Homage Records 1993). She sang and played guitar in the performance art duo Ramada with the vocalist Bret Busch which re-imagined Supremes and Sinatra songs mashed up with Duran Duran songs and original compositions. Meanwhile, Cicada Sings went from a 7 piece band into an experimental bossa nova pop jazz improv trio in 1994 with Thad Wilson on trumpet and Howe’s longtime collaborator Chris “Fatty” Burt on upright bass and drums.Howe started rhyming after being influenced by her Atlanta neighborhood and A Tribe Called Quest which led to a hip hop project called Ph Balance. Howe, Fatty, MC Captain Mudfish Starbolt and bassist Aaron Platt (aka Jack Lingo) and percussionist Tony James formed the group.

Ph Balance released their self-titled debut album on Amy Ray’s (Indigo Girls) label Daemon Records (1999). That same year, Howe released her first solo record “Human” Cicadamafia (1999).

Howe, Bret Busch and Fatty reformed Ramada as a hip hop project in 2000 called Ramadamafia. They released a full length record “Flowish” (2000), an EP “Glow” (2001) and a Holiday EP “Icicles” (2002).

Howe has published seven poetry Pamphlets: Allow Flowers, Be Loved, Handspun, …Busted, ‘Sessin’, Pearling, and Circuitree under her and Fatty’s company Cicadamafia (2001,2002)

Howe released her second solo record “The Sky is Me” Cicadamafia (2001)

Ph Balance released it’s second record “Fluent” (2001) and the band started touring America. The album “Twilight”(2004) produced with Ben Lovett in his LA studio was the final offering from Ph Balance.

Howe and Burt moved to the mountains outside Asheville, North Carolina.

Howe released the poetry book “The Lens I Magnify”(2008) featuring photography by her brother Matt Howe.

Howe formed the band Chakra Bird (2007) with Fatty on upright bass and drummer River Guerguerian. They released the EP “Wilderness of Listening” (2009) with accompanying videos for each song.

Pam recorded and engineered her next record with samples and beats from old vinyl and Fatty’s catalog. Chakra Bird released the album Night Blooming Bird (2012).

Howe is currently performing with her band Special Strength!. Ryan Oslance from Ahleuchatistas is on Drums with Fatty on bass. They recorded their debut record which was self-released in 2017. They are in the studio recording the follow up album to be released in 2019.
