Early Regina---exquisite, addictive.
I love all these songs: Back of a Truck, Buildings, Braille, and especially Pavlov's Daughter. That song is quintessential Regina: intriguing slice of life, potent allusion (Pavlov's dogs), dark humor, sadness, vocal pyrotechnics, and absolutely brillant music. If you started (as I did) listening to Regina with Begin to Hope, you will be delighted to unearth this wonder from the dawn of recorded Regina.

Soaring vocally, quirky pianowise, like a more schooled version of Fiona Apple. Little original songs. Crude? Touching? Stories as seen through the keyholes and windows of New York City by a young red haired singer/pianist... inspired by Mozart, The Beatles, Billie Holiday and Bob Dylan.

the bottled essence of underdeveloped potential
Please note: by underdeveloped I do not mean underproduced. probably. And if I do, it's entirely in the best way possible. Underproduction is the only thing that makes a song on the radio stand out in these times (as if any of these songs would ever be found on a radio... hahahah). Please also note that as of now I am listening to this cd for the third time, so my opinion is just that and first impressions.
By underdeveloped I mean it seems as if Regina sat down in the studio one day with maybe two or three other people (sound engineers etc included, as there's only one other musician on the CD) and played these twelve songs and out popped an album exactly as it chanced to happen that day. While this certainly does have its intrigue, I think the album would be better off with a little thought, rearrangement, extra touches. I personally think Braille would make a much better ending than Sunshine.
On the other hand, the ability to play music basically solo is flooringly impressive, and of course, you could rearrange the songs however you like and burn a shiny new CD for yourself. In the end, my quibbles are extremely minor and I think this CD is going to have a place in my collection for as long as I can forsee.

11:11 makes you want to hear her play it live.
11:11 is raw in comparison with Ms. Spektor's more recent work. The music thrives in moments of surprise like modern and post-modern classical, it moves and responds within itself like a tight jazz ensemble, in moments it has the punch of punk, in other moments it is as languid as a seventeen year old spending a day listening to CDs. It is obviously not pure studio work--the CD leaves you wanting it live.

kind of shocking
everytime I hear regina I lose my head. she's the kind of songwriter whose songs invade places in you that you never think about, by choice or by instinct. Her melodies are masterful, and she is a very inventive pianist with leanings toward a refreshing simplicity, her vocal percussion is pretty much inimitable, and she is a very modest and endearing performer. I can't listen to her too often because her music is so intimate, but this cd is an important one. Regina is a strange genius.
I'm really excited about her new cd, due out sometime this summer (?), which is bound to have songs like "Sampson," "yo girl don't make me take off my belt," "Lachrymosa," and "Hans Christian Anderson."
