Album Notes
Los Angeles, CA (April, 2015) - It's been three years since Spellbound's
last album, but the prolific duo of Bobby Moon (vocals, keyboards,
percussion) and Paul "Pablo" Thomas (guitars, keyboards, percussion) have been recording continually. They've pared down their new album Pase La Voz (pah-say la vohs), to just 10 songs, from the dozens written and ecorded. Release is scheduled for June 30, 2015 on the Selfish
Recordings label. The album's Spanish title roughly translates as "pass
the word," and the word, according to co-founder Thomas, is that this
album was made with Spellbound's dance-happy fans in mind. "After 20
years doing this, it's become clear that we click most with our fans
playing danceable Funk and Latin groove music, and this time we only kept the songs that fell in that vein." Spellbound's last couple of albums,
United Front (2010) & Iluminados (2012), had experimented with
Alternative Rock/Pop and World Music, and were perhaps better appreciated on headphones than on the dance floor. "With our new album we want people to forget their troubles… or at least dance them away," Bobby Moon explains. Lyrically on Pase La Voz, Moon reflects on wisdom gained during his years in Spellbound, with songs like "Discretion," the title track, and "Going Grey." As with all Spellbound albums, Pase La Voz features contributions from a number of guest artists and musicians. This time around they have added saxophonist Scott Martin, from the Grammy-award winning Poncho Sanchez Band, and Cuban/Jamaican vocalist Margaret Young, who toured with reggae legends Black Uhuru. Then there are Spellbound regulars from the cream of the L.A. musician crop: Salsa
bandleader/instrumentalist Johnny Polanco, Artie "Mr.Flute" Webb,
trombonist Mike Daigeau, and percussionist Rudy Mangual. A video will be
released concurrently for the song "

Now into their second decade, Spellbound have proven that it isn't
necessary to have a major record label or tour the world in order to have
a music career. Since first releasing the album Funqueros on their
Selfish Recordings label in 1999, they began receiving accolades from
publications such as Campus Circle (Vol.9,#14) who recommended them "for fans of Santana, P-Funk, Tito Puente, or Cafe Tacuba," even adding that they "like Spellbound more." Those early days of digital music also
scored them three #1 songs on pioneering music website mp3.com. Since
then, Spellbound have released albums on their own label, earning fans
worldwide, with no sign of slowing down. They have also performed at the
Hollywood Bowl (2002), received an award for their song "No Mas Casadas" from the Billboard World Song Contest in 2010, and were chosen as #1 Funk band by the panel at IndieCharts.com in 2012. Thomas and Moon both deal with their creative overflow by channeling their more eclectic musical concepts into solo projects. Thomas has four albums under his Pablo moniker, and Moon released a string of Internet-only singles during 2014.

Spellbound's Pase La Voz was produced by Paul "Pablo" Thomas and Bobby Moon, and will be available on iTunes, CdBaby.com, GooglePlay, and most
online retailers and streaming services June 30, 2015. A digital booklet
will be included with all downloads of the album, and a limited edition
of physical CDs will be available as well. Select live performance dates
to be announced.

Bill South

features Johnny Polanco's Final Appearance
Album arrived quickly and I got to hear it through about four times now. I was interested as this was salsa legend Johnny Polanco's final recorded appearance. And a fine appearance it is. But the big surprise is that the Entire Album Kicks Ass. Majorly. Some of the hottest musicians in L.A. and some of the slickest funkiest music around today. Aurale!
