Album Notes
Raga Jazz, the latest release by the Ray Spiegel Ensemble on the Simla House label, connects Indian classical, devotional, and folk melodies and rhythms with Jazz and Latin bass and drums in the unique style Ray has forged with the ensemble's first release, Sum and Kali. Ragas on the Indian slide guitar and sarangi sing beautiful melodies over carefully crafted grooves, with John Benitez' bass and Tani Tabbal's drums locked in sync with Ray's tabla. Barun Kumar Pal (slide guitar) provides soaring and beautiful melodies and solos, while complimented by the incredible Sarangi (bowed string instrument known in India as the "voice of 100 colors" ) played by master Ramesh Misra. Stan Scott plays the acoustic 6 string guitar on several tracks and also the harmonium, the acoustic keyboard of India.

Great Music with a lot of soul
This CD is really incredibly interesting and listenable on a lot of different levels. It has great grooves, fine playing all around, memorable melodies and cool atmospheric vibe. Ray Spiegal is a virtuoso in both jazz and Indian music and his writing has that quality that draws the listener into the whole spirit of the music. Really nice!

This music transcends boundaries,a peaceful force, inspirational,& grooves
The music transcends all boundaries, wheather one enjoys jazz, world music, funk, or classical Indian music. It has it all! The tones and rhythms groove.I found the Ray's music inspirational and uplifting

An excellent cross-cultural excursion. Ray Spiegel's world class tabla playing melds with eastern and western instruments to make the kind of record that world music is supposed to be--a deft blend of differing traditions.
