Album Notes
Spin Cycle’s debut CD is not really a “first CD” at all. They are a band of New York City veterans whose members have performed on hundreds of CDs including those of many well-known jazz artists, several Grammy winning recordings and their own acclaimed solo projects. The strength of this CD lies in the collaboration that these four solo artists bring to it. The musicians, saxophonist Tom Christensen, drummer Scott Neumann, guitarist Pete McCann and bassist Phil Palombi, are each strong soloists and composer/bandleaders in their own right and bring over 25 years of experience on the New York freelance jazz scene to the music on this new recording.
Co-lead by drummer Scott Neumann and saxophonist Tom Christensen, Spin Cycle creates an eclectic musical world with its roots in jazz, and influences ranging from funk to punk and beyond comes from the diverse careers of all four members. Since arriving in New York City in the mid 1980's from various colleges and road gigs, the members of Spin Cycle have performed and recorded with jazz greats such as Joe Lovano, Rufus Reid, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Jack McDuff and Lee Konitz. In addition, due to the rich nature of their musical life, they can be found performing in settings that range from Broadway orchestras to touring in Curtis Stigers backing band to touring the jam band circuit with Jazz Mandolin Project. These are just a small example of the musical experiences that have shaped the sonic capabilities of Spin Cycle.
Saxophonist Tom Christensen first became interested in music while in high school in California’s Napa valley. Since arriving in New York, Tom has performed and recorded with Toshiko Akiyoshi, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Maria Schneider, John Hollenbeck and has recorded Grammy winning albums with Joe Lovano, Paquito D’Rivera, David Sanchez and Don Sebesky. In addition to performing with Rufus Reid’s Big Band and Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project, Tom, as a Naxos Jazz and Playscape recording artist, has three solo albums to date.
Drummer Scott Neumann grew up in northeastern Oklahoma where his diverse musical tastes were shaped. After leaving the area to go to North Texas State and then tour with the Woody Herman Orchestra, Scott arrived in New York where his versatility has allowed him to work as an in-demand sideman. Scott has recorded on over 65 albums and toured and recorded with artists such as David Liebman, Kenny Werner and Grady Tate to the master banjo player Tony Trischka’s Band. As a bandleader, Scott has recorded one album each with two of his other projects, Osage County (Summit Records) and the Neu3 Trio (Origin Records).
Besides the obvious recognition of Phil Palombi’s and Pete McCann’s musical prowess, Christensen and Neumann have several decades of playing history under their belt with these two exceptional musicians. Tom played with Pete McCann in Maria Schneider’s band during the early 1990’s run at the NYC club Visiones. Scott’s history with Pete goes back over thirty years to their early college days at North Texas State. And with Phil Palombi, Scott and Phil’s most recent playing involved a four-year long weekly engagement at the NYC club Smoke providing the rhythmic backbone for Bill Mobley’s band. As bandleaders and composers, both Phil and Pete have numerous critically acclaimed recordings released under their own name.

Tom Christensen and Scott Neumann are very excited to debut Spin Cycle. They look forward to the long journey as the band evolves. With Phil Palombi and Pete McCann joining them, and the decades of music already played together, they have found the perfect musical personalities to realize the band's musical vision.
