ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
SPOKE is a true ensemble whose synergy is its identity, where collaboration is the medium. Borrowing from the best of the rock and popular music tradition, SPOKE set out to break the model of bands led by a lone soloist/composer and a supporting group. Using an acoustic, chamber quartet format to explore a wide range of musical influences from jazz to salsa to contemporary classical, SPOKE constantly seeks out new boundaries to explore.

Critical Praise:

“Spoke (comprising three US musicians and Australian drummer Danny Fischer) eschewed endless parades of individual virtuosity for compact, beautifully arranged pieces that bubbled with warmth and vitality.” -- Jessica Nicholson, The Age (Melbourne)

"(R)anthems is 'an intentional balancing act between the raw and refined, the focused and the untamed, and the grand and rowdy. Nothing ever goes off the rails and nothing is ever too sedate or bland, as the members of SPOKE continually switch gears and change hats. There’s also enough stylistic diversity at play—pop, bop, spicy pit stops, and more—to keep things interesting.'” -- Dan Bilawski, All About Jazz

"The thought that went into the set’s twelve pieces is literally mind-bending… freestanding, differentiated chapters in a series of detailed stories that are anything but traditional… its standards and targets are set far higher than the norm." -- J. Hunter, All About Jazz, 2009
