American Heroes #3

by Jonathan Sprout

GRAMMY Nominated, 11 time national award winner, “Jonathan Sprout's American Heroes #3 is a collection of highly produced pop rock tunes that sound a bit like Bon Jovi and The Jonas Brothers meet James Taylor. "Jonathan Sprout’s American Heroes #3 delivers another rich punchy packet of diversified heroes including Wilma Rudolph, George Washington Carver, Cesar Chavez, John Muir and Pocahontas to name just a few. The songs are hip and happening - finely produced and performed tributes to some brilliant folks who have left a strong imprint on our society. Perhaps American Heroes #10 will have a nod to Jonathan Sprout! Yes indeed, learning can be a memorable experience."

“… Inspires children not only with the endeavors that brought these individuals to prominence but the personality traits that made their successes possible. Although the carefully researched biographical anecdotes and historical facts are primarily for the enjoyment of elementary and middle school students and their families, the stories of these remarkable lives are an inspiration to all ages.”

"American Heroes #3" Review
"This is actually the third album in a series by the wonderful and award-winning talented singer/songwriter Jonathan Sprout. The American Heroes Series is a collection of original songs that teach children about some of America's greatest citizens.

This is a must have for teachers--and I will be giving one to my son's Kindergarten teacher when he starts this Fall! It is simply awesome. And I say this not just because of the fun upbeat music that gets toes tapping and hands clapping, nor because of Jonathon's wonderful singing, al but for another reason.

We first listened to the cd with my two year old. And both boys together listening to fun lively music tends to result in lots of laughing, clapping and dance moves that would make Michael Jackson jealous (just saying....).

But I really wanted my older son to listen to the words in the songs and the stories being told. So when my two year old went down for a nap, I put the music back on, and called my son to join me. Now he and I do reading, coloring, counting and all the normal kinds of educational activities parents do with preschoolers, but I never really discuss history with him.

This is why I not only love this album, but am so grateful it arrived in our mailbox for a review! We sat on that couch together and talked about the different 'heroes' that Sprout sings about. How some overcame great challenges to be successful, and how nice it is to want to help others. Learning through music is perfect for kids, and I loved how my 4 year old responded to the songs. But I can also imagine this album being perfect for elementary school children of all ages.

My son was fascinated of course with Milton Hershey or as he is known in the song, "Chocolate King". He was also very interested in "Peanut Man," better known to us as George Washington Carver. I was struck by the story of Wilma Rudolph, beautifully told in the song, "Can't Stop Running", which I hadn't known before.

I could go on and on about this album, but it may be better for you to check it out yourself! You can listen to some clips and get an idea of what I'm raving about, and you can buy "American Heroes 3" (or any of the American Heroes collection ) at Amazon for $13.99"

Sophistication beyond lyrics
Since the content of Sprout's work is aimed at educating our youth about our national icons, you'd have to say that this is a "children's" CD. In this genre, I usually think of the music as being a secondary - and often simplistic - accompaniment to the lyric. However, if the usual fare of children's music is like giving them a cookie, here Sprout offers them a 7-layer chocholate mousse cakes with strawberries. He obviously went to such great pains to create a lush and varied musical background for this, his third work in the series, that I had trouble keeping my mind on the lyrics at all during the first several listenings. With a broad array of vocal styles and harmonies - including what seems to be entire choirs of voices behind him - he spices up each song with vibrant flavors. He has made the effort to include talented musicians of all stripes to pitch in. The result will have your child - and you - dancing and laughing and tapping your feet.

And THEN you can listen to the stories. Like his previous works, Sprout recounts aspects of the lives of our great American heroes. Though the songs do not often tell complete stories themselves, they at least spark a cuiriousity that might get your child - or, again, you - to ask more questions. They are a perfect tool for the educatior wanting to add a little color to their lesson planning. My only complaint is that while the music can stand on it's own, sometimes the lyrics feel a little stiff and stuffed into the songs and might not stand on their own. But given the purpose of the oeuvre, they do their job very well.

American Heroes 3
Another wonderful CD from Jonathan Sprout! As an elementary music teacher and as a parent, my students and I have enjoyed Heroes 1 and 2 in music class and at home. We were so excited when Heroes 3 was complete and we were not disappointed! Jonathan has such a wonderful way of capturing the spirit and life of these amazing people from American history in his songs. The beautiful melodies, engaging harmonies, memorable lyrics and special touches make each song unique to the hero. My students are mesmerized by their stories and LOVE the accompanying songs. You can hear them singing in the hallways! Our favorite is "Can't Stop Running" and one class told me it was the best song they have ever heard! I highly recommend this CD as an inspirational and fun way to educate your children!

Another thumbs up
Thank you again, Mr. Sprout, for writing and sharing more Hero music for my 4th graders and their puppets. This year we are adding Come Back Home and Si Se Puede to the songs performed by our FISH TALE puppets. Both songs richly help my children learn about the history of California as well as two men who changed the United States. I have been blessed by the best singers this year and highly recommend them as background singers for any future CD's you are planning.

Just a quick note - I host a kids show on WDBX community radio for Southern Illinois. We love the Chocolate King song! The music is uplifting and the words reflect the emotion many of these heroes truly deserve. Kudos to Jonathon for keeping these stories alive for the many generations to come!
As for these heroes - how wonderful in my lifetime to see the fruits of their labor! Amazing!

Educational and fun!
Jonathan Sprout has done an awesome job with this album! As an elementary school music teacher, I taught several of the songs to my students. The refrains are singable and memorable. My students have fallen in love with the songs. I frequently hear my students in the hallway humming or singing the Jonathan Sprout songs! They entice students to learn about the real life heroes featured in the cd....Their favorites include "Can't Stop Running" (Wilma Rudolph) and "Doctor!" (Elizabeth Blackwell). These songs have a wonderful message and inspire students to reach for their dreams! My favorite song on the album is "Come Back Home." From a musical standpoint, the background vocals compliment the melody beautifully. You will be extremely happy with the purchase of this album.

American Heroes #3
This CD was a true labor of love and it shows on every song! Jonathan Sprout and his co-writers have brought to light/life some of America's most famous and courageous (and some lesser known) contributors to the betterment of humankind in a way that will fascinate and inspire not only young people but their parents and teachers as well. This CD is a must in every classroom and home!

Another great CD by Jonathon Sprout
Once again, Jonathon has created awesome songs about REAL heroes and their achievements. His mastery of what they did and their heroic qualities capture the human essence of these incredible men and women. Kids and adults will not only learn about these heroes; they will find themselves singing along! Bravo, Jonathon.

American Heroes #3
I've had the pleasure to have Jonathan Sprout's Heroes albums be a part of my social studies lessons for nearly ten years! His latest album, "American Heroes #3" is another "instant classic!" My fifth graders absolutely LOVE his music. They ask me all the time to listen to his songs and I often see them "tapping along" or "singing quietly" with Jon's beats. There's such a wide variety of American Heroes chosen on his new album, that it's sure to fit somewhere in a teacher's curriculum no matter what grade level! My class dares you listen to "The Chocolate King" and not sing along....we also dare you to listen to the "Peanut Man" and not giggle!
