Album Notes
Sputnik - Alan Grandy (lead vocal, guitar), Jay Bentoff (bass, backing vocal), and Jeff Harmon (drums, backing vocal) - began performing together during the recording of Grandy's 1997 solo cd release acrowno'stars (which received critical acclaim from Alternative Press and Seattle Weekly, among others).

I, Cosmonaut is Sputnik's debut release, produced by the band and engineered by Bentoff at his Dark Tree Studios.

The song "Alienne" was chosen to be featured in an episode of the FOX Network program "Wonderfalls".
The song "Hello" is included on MAGNET Magazine's best-of-2004 (Jan.-Feb. 2005)issue CD sampler. "Hello" has also been selected to be included on Paste Magazine's February/March 2005 issue CD sampler.

new press:

"a delicious, harmony-filled pop debut" - Paste Magazine Feb./March '05

"...a collection of jangly indie-pop songs that deserve a wider audience" - Exclaim (Toronto, ON) 3.9.05

"...quite talented songwriting...tightly-wound arrangements and unique melodies" - All Music Guide 2.17.05

"This Cleveland-based indie group has one of the more intriguing sounds I've heard of late... songs like the driving 'Luvbuzz', 'Elisabeth' and the gentle 'Alienne' (featured in FOX Network's show 'Wonderfalls') recall the grand, tuneful and harmony-filled pop of NC's Connells while the simmering, modal 'Obsession' and 'Untitled' (with a nice 'Paint It Black' riff) are reminiscent of the Feelies classic LP 'The Good Earth' and 'New Boots' and 'Manchild' will bring to mind R.E.M.
I'd keep an ear out for these lads." - Charleston (WV) Daily Mail 11.18.04

Cleveland Plain Dealer

Kinks here, Pixies there...catchy hooks and shimmering harmonies aplenty - A min
"They're fairly out of this world on 'I, Cosmonaut', reminiscent of the Kinks here, the Pixies there. Alongside a fun remake of "Love is All Around" (the theme song from "the Mary Tyler Moore Show", Sputnik's promising debut packs ten Grandy-penned indie-rock ditties with catchy hooks and shimmering harmonies aplenty. Best of the bunch? 'Alienne', an extraterrestrial ode to the 'unidentified flying object of my desire'. A minus"

Heard them t Hessler St. Fair. Impressed enuff to buy CD
Very good stuff. Heard 'em live and bough the album which is even better. good production. cleveland keeps surprising me. Lots of talent here. I've only been here about 1 1/2 years but Sputnik, John McGrail, Jim Volk and more... I could go on but this Sputnik have a good paired down sound. Just the song Boom!

Cleveland Magazine June '04

tightly crafted songs that deserve to be heard by a wider audience
"I, Cosmonaut" is a poppy, acoustic-rock discfilled with tightly crafted songs that deserve to be heard by a wider audience. Standouts include the dreamy "Alienne", a quirky yet compelling two-minute cover of Sonny Curtis' "Love Is All Around" and the warm harmony-filled finale, "Leslie's Lonely Day".
