Album Notes
These tracks were selected from from live 2-track recordings made in 1983, 84 and 85. We've included versions of the six songs on our 1984 vinyl EP "Squalls", as well as versions of "Crickets" and "Catholic Girls" which were "carts" that were in heavy rotation on WUOG 90.5 FM in 1982 and 83. In addition we've provided several tracks that have never been released before.

Bob Hay - guitar and vocals
Al Walsh - bass
Diana Torell - keyboard and vocal
Ken Starratt - guitar
Mark Cooper Smith - drums
Mig Little - vocals (on Catholic Girls)

Squalls were a band who came from the same rich Athens, GA scene as B-52’s, R.E.M., Love Tractor, Method Actors, Limbo District and Pylon, but played their own brand of quirky pop with their own unique sound. Equal parts Lovin’Spoonful, Grateful Dead and Talking Heads, they got many a person up on the dance floor back in the 1980’s. Fronted by Michigan native Bob Hay, who had moved to Athens, GA from Kennebunkport, Maine with Ken Starratt in 1978, because Ken said, “something was going on in Athens.” Bob and Ken found kindred spirits centered around the Eldorado, a local vegetarian restaurant, where the B-52s had also worked and practiced, as well as at weekly bridge games that continue to this day. Wild jam sessions ensued and a line-up coalesced not too long before their first show at the 40 Watt on December 3, 1981. Lead singer/guitarist Bob Hay wrote and arranged most of the songs. At rehearsals they were “squallified” by “Big Al” Walsh on guitar and bass, Ken Starratt on guitar, Mig Little on drums, and Diana Torell on keys. They were joined on drums not too much later by Mark Cooper Smith, who had been Al and Diana’s classmate at West Georgia, with Mig then moving to percussion. Everyone could and did sing and instruments were passed from hand to hand on stage.

Squalls Live is a CD of 24 tracks recorded by house soundman T. Patton Biddle and selected from five 1980’s shows at the 40 Watt Club. These songs were all written between the years of 1980-1985. Up to this point, Squalls had only released a self-titled EP and a single Crickets/Bride of Frankenstein. This was the time period just before they were filmed in 1986 for Athens,GA/Inside-Out and before their later recordings for Dog Gone Records. This was also their original lineup before Walsh and Little left the band. They were basically unknown outside of Athens,GA but had built up a loyal following there. For purists, this is the Squalls at their best. Squalls Live is full of treats such as the previously unreleased Catholic Girls, sung by Mig Little while she coolly bangs on an old tin painted with roses and the equally cool unreleased instrumental Unrelated Happenings.
Squalls Live was released on CD Baby and at local record stores in Athens,GA on December 4, 2017 - which just happens to be 36 years and a day after their first show at the 40 Watt Club.
