Album Notes
The Stairwell Sisters
good-time gals love old-time tunes

The Stairwell Sisters' unique mix of rollicking dance tunes, rich country harmonies and red-hot buckdancing have made them the old-time stringband of choice from the hills of San Francisco. Energetic musicianship and tight vocal arrangements make for a kicking quintet that delivers both good listening and good dancing. The Stairwell Sisters celebrate the release of their debut CD, The Stairwell Sisters (2003) on Yodel-Ay-Hee Records.

"Combine this band's vocal prowess with skilled multi-instrumental chops and a hellbent-for-leather attitude, and you have a wild funky recording." Old Time Herald, Fall 2003

Featuring: Lisa Berman - dobro, guitar, banjo
Martha Hawthorne - bass
Evie Ladin - banjo, buckdancing All of the sisters sing.
Stephanie Prausnitz - fiddle
Sue Sandlin - guitar, tiple

The venerable Bay Area fiddler/singer Suzy Thompson says: "These citybilly 'sisters' pick and sing with twang and verve...Sweet and haunting harmonies, energetic grooves, and unusual instrumental textures...give them that unique Stairwell Sisters sound!"

"exciting and wonderful... glorious harmonies and a driving pulse...The Stairwell Sisters have produced a gem of a recording. Bravo!" Sing Out! Magazine, Fall 2003

wonderful music and feel; best version of O Death ever(sorry Ralph
great feel and energy to this recording...a real find. especially love the banjo and the vocals but it's all great. best version of "Oh Death" I've heard (sorry, Ralph, they do it better!).

Wow! Excellent Olde Tyme music
What a gem. Their version of Oh Death and the Dylan tune Buckets of Rain are stellar. Great clawhammer banjo playing and harmonies. If this cd won't get your feet tapping you need to see a doctor.
