Album Notes
Mahaeo (Creator) knows me as Stephen Standing Owl of Northern Cheyenne Descent. I began playing the Native American flute about six years ago. I had never intended to play for the public. I just enjoyed the spirit of the flute. As I traveled to Pow Wows I was asked to play my flutes to fill in time during the drum breaks, the response from the public was overwhelming, and eventually I was asked to be part of the programs at many of the Pow wows in the New England area. Since that time I have played for audiences at schools, presentations on Native culture, library systems, campgrounds and historical societies. I had the honor of opening on stage for Jeff Ball on two occasions and to play on stage with Bill Miller on one.
Jeff nominated for best flutist of the year in 1998, by the Native American Music Awards, and in 2001 his recording Cedar Moon won an award. I thank Jeff for it was he who unleashed the gift that Mahaeo bestowed in me at birth.
Many people asked if I planned to make a recording. It was not until I met Tahakierente- Howard Lyons at a Pow Wow that I even considered it. Howard is of the Mohawk Nation and is a singer, songwriter and producer. His recording Hopes and Dreams nominated for best folk recording by the Native American Music Awards in 2001. Howard is the owner of Skydome Records. This is where Night Flight was created.
I have always respected Native Story Tellers for it is they who keep the past alive. Not being blessed with the gift of verbal story telling I choose to tell stories with my flutes. Each song on Night Flight brings you on a journey. Listen to the flutes voices and hear their stories. Relax and enjoy!

Thankyouverymuch for opening for Bill Miller..
Everyone was so very impressed with your talent playing the flute(s). I hope to cross paths again in the future, perhaps at powwow or other native gatherings.

SSO's music takes me to a wonderful place
I've listened to this CD at my masseuse's place. Now I can have that relaxation at home. It's wonderful. Looking forward to the next one.

Beautiful music with heartwarming songs
Stephen's CD is a remarkable collection of variety and moving songs. When you listen to this CD, you also feel it. I have looked for a theme song for "Echoes in the Wind" for 10 years - Stephen Standing Owls, "Journey" became "the" right song. I feel my musical journey has been a rewarding one, and his song is a wonderful opening song. No matter how many times I hear it, it is as lovely as the first time.

Beautiful music from a gentle and beautiful man.
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Stephen Standing Owl at a recording session at the University of Maine at Augusta. His music is a reflection of the man - from the heart, beautiful, and spiritual. His flute playing takes the listener to another place - a place that we all need to visit. Check it out.
