Album Notes
Get ready to go back in the day when Jazz was “King” in the historic Hill District of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania at The Hurricane and The Crawford Grill….

A Tribute to 3 Jazz Icons…
Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff & Nancy Wilson

with Vincent Sims, Guitar; Ron Gregg, Drums

Accomplished jazz siren, KATT HEFNER, possesses a compelling voice that ranks in the very top echelon of respected female jazz singers. On stage, Katt is truly an engaging performer who just loves to entertain. With a voice rich in strength and clarity, her melodic tones capture and mesmerize her audience. Her lyrics flow in a rare combination of beauty, voice, and poise. With a list of credits that include off-Broadway musicals, television shows, movies, CDs/ records, and concerts, she has shared the stage with such musical greats as Patti LaBelle, Al Hibler, The Temptations, Sandra Reaves, Luther Vandross, The Ink Spots, The Four Freshman, Warren Covington Orchestra, Connie Haines, John Lamb, Buster Cooper, and the Bay Area’s Fred Johnson, Kenny Drew Jr., Richard Drexler, The Jazz Cellar’s Underground Orchestra, The 42nd Street Big Band and 52pc. Richey Community Orchestra.

Born in Ford City, Pennsylvania, STAN “The Man” HEFFNER is a self taught musician. The dream of wanting to become an organ player began at age 8 after hearing “Midnight Special” and “The Sermon” by Jimmy Smith. Being influenced by the sounds of Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff, Stan started playing the organ at age 16. Helping to form The Versatiles, a high school band of 9 musicians including 3 siblings; one of which is one of Florida’s noted prominent Female Vocalists, Katt Hefner, Stan’s music career began. His high energy playing was developed by watching live performances of Jimmy McGriff at the Crawford Grille and The Hollywood Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
During the 70’s and 80’s Stan experimented with playing other keyboards and began writing dynamic songs including Christian contemporary. With an array of songs listed in the Library of Congress, “Stan the Man” is a musician to be recognized. His latest performance with Katt Hefner and saxophonist Butch Thomas was an eye opener to an expanded music venture.

Saxophonist, composer and jazz educator, BUTCH THOMAS, is a widely known and respected, having toured with Sting, Lenny Kravitz, the late legendary jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius, Elton John, Diana Ross, James Taylor and many others. Born and raised in St Louis, Missouri, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Music from Webster University. Soon after graduating, he relocated to New York City, where he established a relationship with the great instrumentalist and composer Jaco Pastorius (featured on Pastorius’ recordings “Punk Jazz” and “NYC Jam” and featured live from 1983-1987). Then (as they say), the rest is history. He continued on to perform with a “Who’s Who” in music entertainment including The Temptations (1986), Thomas Dolby (1988), Dave Valentin (1988) and Lenny Kravitz (1989). His ambidextrous florid jazz style placed him comfortably in the company of an eclectic roster including “The College Boyz”, “The Cult”, Tyrone Davis (1990) and the rock group “Living Colour” (1991). He’s received a number of video credits including Lenny Kravitz’ hit “It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over”, Queen Latifah’s “How Do I Love Thee", Sting’s “You Still Touch Me”.

VINCENT SIMS/ Guitarist Vincent Sims, raised in St. Petersburg, Florida, attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston and received a Bachelors degree in Information Systems from The University of South Florida. He has played with many recognized artists in the jazz and blues fields. Artists such as Al Downing, Lucky Peterson, James Peterson, Koko Taylor, Katt Hefner and Belinda Womack. Vincent is a former board member of the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association.

RONALD GREGG (Drummer) is a native of the Tampa Bay area. Born in St. Petersburg, he was involved in music education and bands throughout his school years and continued his musical education at the United States Naval School of Music, Little Creek, Virginia. He then served in the Army as a member of the United States Army Band. During the '70's, he played with numerous road groups and then returned to St. Petersburg and played with the renowned jazz great, Al Downing, for many years as part of The Ricky Lyons Jazz Trio and with Jack McDuff.

Katt Hefner is best described 'grace under pressure." There is an underlying strength in every note she sings and even during the softest passages of a song, you can sense that something is about to happen. Her ability to transform songs into performances - creates an atmosphere that takes each song to it's proper place musically and emotionally.

When Stan Heffner plays the B3, it sounds like a symphony playing Mahler. The power and dephtness with which he moves around that massive vintage keyboard is remarkable to watch and even better to listen to.

This group is fresh and inventive while still playing to the legacy of jazz they follow. There's just no one else out there doing what they're doing.

Over the top!
"Under and Over Blues" is over the top!!!! When my husband and I heard it, we were left speechless! I bought the first, and my husband bought 5 more to give to our friends! This CD is breathtaking! My personal favorite is "Cheater," written by "Stan the Man" Heffner! I cannot seem to get through a day without that song whirling in my head! And Kat's voice is mind blowing! She doesn't just sing - her voice soars! The BEST thing you can possibly do for yourself is to order this CD or download it, NOW!

This is an amazing blend of voice and instrument. Perfect in every way. No one plays like Stan-and Katts voice is absolutly wonderful. Music extraordinaire.

What a masterpiece! Legendary!
Stan Heffner is the master on the B3! He is able to "wow" any listener with his techniques and versatility on the keys. I get chills every time I listen to his mastery. The vocalist, Katt Hefner, is a phenomenon! She sings to touch the soul, and accomplishes just that with every note. Tune your ears into "real music", and buy this album. You will not be disappointed.
