Talking to Myself

by Joanne Stato

If Laura Nyro and Mose Allison had a daughter together, her performance might resemble Stato's lovely soprano with attitudinous interludes of gritty alto; in turn sardonic, romantic, reflective, emotional, and poignant.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Joanne Stato sings her original acoustic tunes in her clear, expressive voice spanning a lovely soprano down to a gritty alto. The songs are in turn sardonic, romantic, reflective, emotional, and poignant. Stato accompanies herself on piano.

The project was produced, engineered, and mixed by John Seay, a prolific Baltimore songwriter in his own right--three tunes (including "As Far As I Can Tell") on the new CD were written by Seay.

Stato's witty and evocative songs chronicle her life experiences: a would-be musician working construction in "Denver;" a weak wristed woman living alone pondering a two-timing lover in "A Difficult Day," and a young romantic member of a just-being-born Colorado band in "Starry Night."

Other selections include a Baltimore inner-city arts project that brings the neighborhood together in "Great Wall of Happiness," and the pitfalls of sharing a house with a group of young skateboarders in "Dust in the Light."

Joanne was born in New Jersey, has lived in Maine, Colorado, Virginia, and now resides in Baltimore City, Maryland. She is a member of the Baltimore Songwriters Association and has performed in the past at the Folkal Point, Baldwin Station, the Takoma Park Folk Festival, and many other venues in Virginia, DC, and Maryland.

Instantly Fall in Love with Joanne Stato
Being a longtime fan of Joanne Stato's music, I was honored when she asked me to be part of her debut CD, "Talking To Myself". Everyone of Joanne's songs are personalized with her uniqueness and distinguished by stories with strong imagry. "Whales" and "Denver", for instance, are so intensely filled with description of their respective subjects, the listener can't help but be transported ... a breathtaking experience. "Starry Night" is hauntingly beautiful, poignant and deep. "Girl Thing" is bouncy, bright and refreshing; celebratory and jubilant! If you like Judy Collins or Joni Mitchell, you'll fall in love instantly with Joanne Stato and her music.

Winning combination - angelic voice and passionate lyrics
Joanne Stato is a remarkably gifted singer-songwriter. Her voice is very distinctive - from mellow lows to exquisite highs she has a range and quality that is rare and immediately recognizable. The songs on this CD are filled with vivid imagery and linger in the mind long after the CD is over. I love ballads and there are some fine ones on this CD. "Denver" and "Starry Night" rank among my all time favorite ballads of any recording artist. But Joanne also knows how to get a groove going... many of the songs on this CD really rock. "Dust in the Light" is one of my favorites and I love that piano groove on "Talking to Myself." Overall, a CD that I'm proud to have in my collection.
