Album Notes
Stephen Guy is an English songwriter based in Manchester. His knack for coining sweet melodies and memorable riffs has lead to international radio plays and positive reviews for his music. His influences include the Go-Betweens, New Order, Teenage Fanclub, JAMC, Ennio Morricone and much more.

Fairground in the Trees is his debut album and features 9 songs and 2 instrumentals. All tracks recorded at home on a Tascam 788. He also uses the names Eight Pictures and Aycliffe Sunz to record under. His website is www.myspace.com/steguy

Erasing Clouds
I almost let this CD slip right by me. A CDR with an indistinct, photo-copied cover, case broken in the mail; nothing to see here. That would have been a major mistake. The first song alone is a gem. “In San Francisco”, it’s called, and it’s basically a fuzzy pop song about having a crush on someone and imagining them walking hand-in-hand together in San Francisco. A great melody, loud fuzzy electric guitars: basic but irresistible. Along with that is another tuneful love song, a goodbye song with tinges of the Jesus and Mary Chain, and a song that essentially consists of Ste Guy (aka Stephen Guy) whistling and playing guitar. Again: basic but irresistible. It’s the simple things in life, I suppose.

FATEA
There's still a place for whistling in acoustic pop, it's not until you hear it in a song that you realise just how under used it is, especially when done well. "I Can Feel It", the opening, instrumental, track of the self titled "Ste Guy" ep does it very well indeed. The ep is a combination of acoustic pop and more indie flavoured tracks with the former working better than the latter, though I think that's partly due to budget and mixing. When working with melody as the core component, Ste Guy shows himself to be a good songwriter, delivering entertaining pop songs in the classic sense.

Pop Musicology
Manchester-based indie-pop bedroom-dweller Stephen Guy (inexplicably abbreviated to ‘Ste’) has tenets and reference points of his field aplenty, but his delivery is commendably warm and interesting. There’s a slight fuzz to the edges of Goodbye To You that, though it could equally be the product of the demo recording process, recalls the effected recordings and retro stylisation of Fred Thomas’ work with Saturday Looks Good To Me, but with the merest hint of Ian Broudie to provide the bounce.
The vocally-bereft I Can Feel It is by far the strongest track here, possessive of and meandering through worlds of melancholy. Crucially, it’s quick of tempo, rendering any unwanted sentimentality too cloying to stifle it, and the guitar/whistling unison is charming. The remaining recordings here are cheerfully without any flab, being as they are all over in about six lovely seconds. If anything, the simple choices Guy makes align him with a fine heritage of Northern indie-pop - MJ Hibbett and Chris T-T would do well to keep an eye on him.

I know it can be some people’s idea of hell having to listen to endless demos but I love ‘em. In fact I am sometimes disappointed when the polished version arrives, preferring the crackle of spontaneity that the demo process often gives songs. So I hope Ste Guy never loses the rhapsody that so infuses his first demo. Stephen is based in Manchester and has a keen melodic ear. He is a fan of Ennio Morricone and Teenage Fanclub (eclectic boy that he is) and it’s the former that informs ‘I Can Feel It’. Although he has a fine voice he lets his whistling persona take centre stage on this song and the result is an affecting stroll. His knack for coining sweet melodies and memorable riffs are like a breath of fresh air in the oft stagnant spaghetti junction of the indie scene.
