From MainlyPiano
"Awakening" is a warm, soothing collection of eleven original pieces by world flutist Stephen DeRuby. Influenced by a variety of musical cultures that include Asian and Middle Eastern genres, DeRuby performs on an assortment of his own hand-made flutes as well as guitar, Chinese harp, vocals, mandolin, keyboards, and kalimba. Several guest artists contribute sonic color and range on guitars, percussion, steel drum, dulcimer, vocals, and tabla. A certified Holistic Health Practitioner, DeRuby has dedicated his lifetime to music, the healing arts, and spiritual awareness. He has been practicing Yoga, Tai Chi, meditation, and Eastern philosophies since 1968 and has been playing various musical instruments since he was 13. Sometimes rhythmic and upbeat, sometimes more haunting and ethereal, everything about this music rings true, providing a 52-minute healing and relaxing respite from the hectic pace of everyday life.

"Awakening" begins with “Loving Kindness,” a hypnotic piece that features DeRuby on flute and guzheng (Chinese harp) and J. Arif Verner on guitar. Languid and free, it sets the tone of the album beautifully. “One With You” is quite different with vocals, flute, percussion, and guitar. Although not all of the lyrics are in English, it has an almost folksong feeling to it. The bright and lively “Pilgrimage” conveys movement and excitement - a favorite. “Body of Light” goes into a more Middle Eastern direction with strong but gentle rhythms that mesmerize as the flutes, guitar, mandolin, and viola cast their own magical spell. “Desert Star” continues the mystical enchantment, going a bit darker in tone as the rhythms hypnotize and soothe - also a favorite. The spirited “Freedom” captivates with an infectious energy and swirling motion. Flutes, guitar, percussion, and kalimba (an African instrument also known as the “thumb piano”) give this piece an earthy, joyous warmth. “Flow” moves slowly and freely without boundaries or restrictions. “Blessings,” a beautiful piece for flute, guitar, and percussion, closes the album. Smoothly flowing with a gentle, soothing touch, it’s a quiet ending to a very evocative musical exploration. Recommended!

Reveiw excerpt from Music and Media Focus
I would imagine that there are a relatively small percentage of musicians who actually make the instruments they play. Stephen DeRuby is one of them, with over 40 years experience as a musician and craftsman of beautiful high quality Native American-style flutes. While Stephen is well known for his Native flutes and music, his latest CD, “Awakening,” expands his vision and is more of a World flute recording that express his global musical influences which range from East Indian ragas to Native American, African, Middle Eastern, Latin, and Oriental music. In addition to sultry flutes, the album also includes languid guitar, dulcimer, tambura, tabla, chants, and gentle uplifting rhythms, performed by a number of talented guest musicians. In fact, the world music influence is felt right from the first track entitled “Loving Kindness,” which opens with the mystical Eastern sound of the tambura creating a drone for guitar and dulcimer to dance upon for a full minute, before the first notes on flute are heard. When it does come in, its rich airy tone soars above the earthy vibe created by the stringed instruments. On the next song, “One With You,” the sound of hand drums, acoustic guitar, and flute, create a gentle groove that becomes the sound bed for the chanting of “Om Namah Shivaya” - an ancient Hindu mantra.

There is a lot of Eastern influence that is woven in throughout the album, however it is often mixed with other styles that create a cultural melting pot which brings to mind artists such as The Paul Winter Consort, Ancient Future, Michael Brant DeMaria, and others. One of the more meditative tracks on the album is “River of Life,” which evokes a feeling of floating serenely down the Ganges. On a similar note, a song called “Flow” featured a chiming acoustic electric guitar with chorus effect accompanying Stephen’s graceful flute work. “Awakening” is an inspired album, both musically and spiritually, as exemplified by these words from Stephen: “Whether I'm making or playing the flute, my heart's intention flows into it. The tone of the woodwind is the breath of spirit into matter.”

Writings by Serge Kozlovsky
By forcing to awaken the sleeping mind
You’ll understand the world has changed.
In the middle of the hectic modern world with all its worries and fears, when destruction of civilization seems to be closer and closer the awakening time of human consciousness is coming. The only path for any human being is to look into the depths of his own inner self and arouse his spirit. The music of Stephen DeRuby helps the listener to purify his mind and reach a higher state of consciousness.
The woodwinds, strings and percussion in which the original tunes are interlaced with world music influences heal the soul and celebrate the beauty of the present moment. Stephen DeRuby masterfully plays various flutes. His music is full of inspiration and gives play to the imagination.
Earthly sounds of woodwinds with percussion beats and flowing strings evoke the cells of body to vibrate in unison and these vibrations heal it. The artist says “the tone of the woodwind is the breath of spirit into matter”. And this statement is completely true. Yet, something ancient and unspeakably beautiful is present in the sounds of flutes.
The music of Stephen DeRuby is meditative. The silence stays behind the sounds of his tunes. And the nakedness along with incredible sincerity is felt in the music of “Awakening”.
Generally speaking, the music of Stephen is multidimensional. It is filled with the joy of life and acceptance of all, as it is. One wants to live and create while listening to “Awakening”. It encourages moving on.
So, listen to this album, enjoy the music and be in the present moment. It is so easy. And then the miracles can happen...

The RajMan Review
While the music on Stephen DeRuby’s latest album is primarily based on Eastern philosophy and culture, it draws just as much from other exotic sounds from around the world, resulting in an ear-opening amalgam of world music styles.

In addition to the audio styling of India and the Far East, the music also features some elements that could be characterized as African and South American, all fused through the new age and world fusion sensibilities that DeRuby adeptly demonstrates.

The focal point of the music is DeRuby’s mesmerizing, hypnotic compositions and melodic lead flute playing, which is beautiful, on target, and commands attention. DeRuby’s performance is nicely embellished by a host of other musicians on instruments such as guitar, bass, keyboards, and percussion.

This is a very well-done CD that provides mental and emotional release, as well as a pleasant listening experience.
