ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Stephen Lawrenson
Obscuriosity
(Kool Kat Musik)
A veritable one man band, Stephen Lawrenson makes his mark as genuine pop auteur with the oddly titled Obscuriosity, an album that finds him alone at the helm and ably piloting this exceptional effort towards fruition. Released on the consistently superior Koot Kat Musik label, it reflects Lawrenson’s obvious respect for pop precedents, with the Raspberries, the Records and Emitt Rhodes being among the most apparent. Still, with songs like the title track and “Your Karma” leading the pack, it’s also clear that Lawrenson has all the skills necessary to pursue a sound all his own. His voice has a willowy characteristic that manages to propel him somewhere midway between eagerness and urgency, imbuing a certain fragility that proves consistently endearing and engaging. That trait’s clearly borne out on offerings like “Words To Say” and “Small White House,” where the cooing, soothing harmonies form a perfect backdrop for the songs’ pleading perspective. Hopefully he’ll get the attention he not only desires, but also clearly deserves. Obscuriosity is a modest little gem of an album that ought to be uncovered. "No Depression".

STEPHEN LAWRENSON HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY POWERPOPAHOLIC, POWER POP REVIEW, TOP TEN OF 2013 CANDIDATE

Stephen Lawrenson “OBSCURiOSiTY”
Stephen Lawrenson makes a huge impression here, starting with “Your Karma” it channels early psyche-pop of The Idle Race and The Move. The title track runs at a faster tempo, adding a fantastic chorus worthy of The Pillbugs. Then chiming 12 string Rickenbacker strums greet us on “Words to Say” with George Harrison-style slide guitar flourishes. “Small White House” is a SMiLE-styled character study tribute to Brian Wilson, and the jangly “Ordinary” is like a lost Gripweeds track. Stephen slows down for the moving “Forever And A Day,” with its West Coast feel and banjo backing – very much a treat for fans of The Autumn Defense. It closes out with the early-ELO inspired ” Pale Yellow.” So as you can see from all the links, this becomes a mix tape of power pop influences from across four decades. It’s hard to find fault here, as the songwriting and musicianship are top notch. It’s another addition to my new top ten for 2013. Powerpopaholic

Stephen Lawrenson-OBSCURiOSiTY. Stephen Lawrenson's third album (and first since 2009's Somewhere Else) might just be his best to date. The Pennsylvanian power popper has signed on with Kool Kat, and he continues to perfect his ELO-meets-Crowded-House-with-a-little-Brian-Wilson sound. The title track is the real highlight here, inverting the usual order of things by making the verses more urgent than the chorus while all the while giving it a "lost classic" feel (in other words, an "obscuriosity"). "Words to Say" adds some jangle to the mix, and the piano-backed "Small White House" captures the mid-to-late-period Beatles vibe with all its attendant bells and whistles. This is top-notch stuff, and fans of this style won't want to miss it. Absolute Powerpop
