ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Blending Blues, Soul, Jazz, and R&B, Steph Johnson is that rare talent that captures your attention from the first note. Whether hearing her music in a live setting or on her recordings, Johnson has an amazing presence, topped off by that voice. Powerful, sultry. Then there’s her deft rhythmic, jazz inflected guitar playing. All backed up by her absolute command of the stage.
In 2004 Johnson released her debut EP, A Demonstration, and continued to build a following, her hard work resulting in a nomination in the category of “Best Acoustic Performer” at the 2005 San Diego Music Awards. Even with all the successes thus far, 2006 will be a banner year for Johnson. Look for the release of her debut album, Genesee Avenue, this spring, as well as touring, festival dates and much more ahead. Steph Johnson acknowledges that the album’s release will mark the beginning of a new phase of her career as a musician. “I know I will sing and write and play guitar for the rest of my life. Where that takes me I don't know.” While Johnson may not know exactly where her music may take her, with a talent as big as she has, music fans will definitely want to follow.

Versatile, soaring voice, with lyrics that are beautiful yet haunting
This CD showcases versatile, soaring vocals of Steph Johnson, yet the lyrics underscore real life that haunts the listener. Her band sounds great. The guitar riffs are first rate, and the harmonies are delicious. I like all her songs because they tell a story, a journey through her life and times, stories that grab people and somehow reach through the speakers to reveal their own stories. Highly recommended addition to every CD collection.

Genesee Avenue
Steph Johnson this album is the bomb! I loved it at first listen and was sold...on... Bluesy-Jazz in the order of Jill Scott, my girl. Steph Johnson goes straight to the heart of the matter. But with music, lyrics and vocal style distinctively her own.

Steph's blend of sensuality and innocence are an amazing combination
Steph and I were on the bill opening for Vonda Shepard when I first heard her. Her music stopped me dead in my tracks! Steph's blend of sensuality and innocence, old soul and new groove are such an amazing combination! This is a woman who I believe can take her career anywhere she wants to go! You will not be disappointed with her album and I am certain we will continue to watch her career blossom in the years to come!

Steph Johnson is the voice of her generation
Listening to her voice I am humbled and impressed by her gifts. She is a talented singer, songwriter, poet, and storyteller and seems to speak for women who are going through the things women go through in their relationships with men. She is so honest. What a joy it is to listen. Reminds me of Ricki Lee Jones' first release.
