Album Notes
Absolute Power Pop says that Steve Baskin’s third full-length record, Dead Rock Star, is his best yet and dubbed it one of 2015’s early best. Pop Geek Heaven included Single Thing About You (Chinchilla) in their Best of 2015 compilation. International Pop Overthrow included the record on its Best of 2015 list.

Steve Baskin, an Atlanta-based singer/songwriter, has been writing and recording a unique blend of smart, energetic power pop and Americana rock and roll since his debut record a decade ago.

Dead Rock Star is Steve Baskin’s third full-length record. While it's probably best described as a rock record, the sounds vary from power pop to Americana to straight-up country -- all with a fair amount of Southern fried seasoning.

And the record packs in a full range of subjects and emotions as well – from life moments to lamenting death to mocking death to the analysis of the presence of butt cheeks on pigs. Yep.

Pretty much the entire record was co-written with Scott Shiflett, an Americana master from Loganville. Steve and Scott met through a Craigslist ad. Their thoughts, guitars and harmonies clicked immediately. Songs started popping out, and then there was a new record. Joining in on the writing was Trey Hollingsworth. Trey wrote/co-wrote two of the songs from Steve’s 2006 debut and played with Steve in The Hippycrickets and Cindy Wilson Band.

Scott Shiflett (guitars, harmonica and background vocals), Brian Hudson (drums and percussion) and I (guitars, mandolin, bass and vocals) handled the playing on the majority of the tracks. But we also had some awesome Atlanta and Nashville musicians helping us out. Zoot Blasingame – organs (Kissed Me Forever, Pig, I Call Your Number), Doug Carter – piano/organ (I’m Down), Bill Fleming – pedal steel (If I Died Today), Rich Herring – lead and electric guitars, bass (I’m Down, Dead Rock Star, I Call Your Number, Killer Queen), Wayne Killius – drums (I’m Down), Charley Mishalaney – upright bass (If I Died Today, Nobody Died Today), Patrick Rusert – pedal steel (Wasted All These Years, Precious), Dow Tomlin – bass (I’m Down) and Lester Walker - trumpet – (Killer Queen).

Rich Herring and John Behrens mixed the songs at Trax Productions, Nashville, TN. Engineered by me at Underground Studio; Joe Kay and Jeffery Gascione at Gaslight Studios, Atlanta, GA (drum recordings); Steve Rieck (drum recording – Precious). Mastered by Colin Leonard at Sing Mastering, Atlanta, GA.

A South Georgia native, Steve started with the rock and the roll at a young age. In addition to the talented rockers he shares the stage with today, Steve has played/toured/shared the stage with greats, Grammy Award winners and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees including Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), The Shirelles, Carla Thomas, Mary Wells, Percy Sledge, The Beach Boys, Cindy Wilson (B52s) and Rob Thomas among others.
