Steve Grandinetti - Heart Of Me
Blues, Jamrock, a little soul and pop tunes - songwriter Steve Grandinetti rather than sticking to a single style always puts the songs in foreground . So his new album "Heart Of Me" with 18 songs is a musical grab bag. Or should we say "Forrest Gump", a box of chocolates, you never know what you get before you try?
"Down In New Orleans" and "Deaf Dumb And Blind" were the first songs I heard from Steve Grandinetti. Bluesy, with grooves from New Orleans and some bite. And then this: "Heart of Me" is a pop song that comes along almost fragile, in love and restrained. This is a different Grandinetti than I initially expected. And the second song, "Sweet Temptation" is at first very coy before you realize how much power and sometimes indignation, there is here. So it continues - alternating through the styles, mostly gently, somehow through his human nature he always wins favor for himself. And then there's the "Octopus Song": Finally a rocking guitar - and Steve's rap sometimes reminds me of the wicked humor of some Zappa songs.
Another new facet. Yes, you really do not know what next to expect in "Heart of Me". The album is apparently missing a connecting theme, an arc of suspense. But later you find that it does not necessarily need it, because all the songs are worth listening to in their own right, some even of enchanting beauty and stunning wit. No - I should not have expected a blues album. My internal image of the musician was not appropriate. Here you can experience a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (only some instruments were played by guest-musicians), who has a much larger bandwidth. And it's fun to always be surprised by this musical piñata.
