Now that I’ve listened to this eponymous debut of STEVE JENSEN for a 4th spin, I find my brain replaying a handful of these songs over and over, they are truly pop confections, the melodies and lyrics are so catchy, they remind me of the clever clever bits of The Beatles when radio, and 45rpm singles ruled the roost when it came to the explosion known as the British Invasion.

Steve has many voices, and I believe he proudly wears a badge of influence of Lennon and McCartney on each sleeve, as his songwriting is so slick, it sticks. In days of past, there would easily be 3 or 4 singles promoted , such as the sonic opening track, “Pain To My Heart”, and an ode to a beloved family Collie, “Julie My Friend”.

Steve is a songwriting vocalist, and just as importantly, the main guitarist who lays down innovative guitar bridges, and especially solos, which are tightly arranged, with tasteful effects. Phased fx are very effective, reminiscent of Joe Walsh, who invented licks and phrases that are compelling, especially when you experience Steve’s album with headphones, or with your best system cranked up to woofer blowing volume.

Lyrically, his wry observations play out stories that seemed intimately personal, first-hand experiences, but are effectively fictional situations that I can relate to, hooking me into the songs, imagining myself, and my family and friends in different situations.
Steve’s songs are totally relevant to contemporary life, with whimsical wordplay reflecting a heart full of soul. This album reflects the collective experiences of a tight knit group of musicians who joined Steve and Producer Terry Lafleur in a storied Vancouver studio, TML, to bring to fruition this DIY album.
Terry’s contribution is significant, as his percussion, keyboards, backup vocals and his credit as arranger have lent a distinctive, solid sonic anchor to Steve’s songs. You can hear distinctive guitar signatures of Dave Corman, who contributed his tones with 12 string electrics, lead guitar and bass work, and even a Uke solo on “If It’s A Crime”.

Randall Stoll is anchoring the rhythm as only a versatile drum master can, giving the kick and sizzle to these tunes. David Stones Organ and Keys weave together to add wonderful layers.

This is a perfect album for a Saturday or Sunday play, it’s full of quirks and hooks that will engage your brain and body. I highly recommend it, as it’s a sequential roller coaster of pop rock that: is original, yet familiar, so you will enjoy the atmosphere it reflects, whether in your car on the road, or in your kitchen, or your special listening room...it jumps out of your best speakers; while it was mixed by Corman at Westsonic Music in Vancouver, it was Mastered at the world famous ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS.

There’s magic in this music! Do yourself a favour, get STEVE JENSEN, if you’re a music junkie, it will give you a quick high, and a longer lasting fix the more you experience it. Its a well produced , not over produced wall of sound.
