Album Notes

Steve Morgan
Today, when traditions in every area of human activity are being cast aside at such a hysterical speed, and cultural landmarks are being swept away almost before we have had enough time to digest their significance, if any, the continuing survival of a musician whose work is anachronistic and yet relevant to the present day is a very remarkable phenomenon indeed, because Blues music and all it´s offshoots from Folk to Country have been evolving so bewilderingly fast, it seems almost beyond the realms of possibility that we should be able to savor the pure style of an original.
And yet in another way it is this very speed of development that makes such a thing possible. If it is true that the entire history of this type of music can be encapsulated in the last sixty years, then that is at least reasonable to hope that there exists certain pockets of activity where artists can work in the original mold. This is really why Steve Morgan has such a magnetic attraction, because he is at one and the same time a symbol of the fount of the blues and a highly original contemporary performer.

- Steve Morgan is one of those artists that you hear for the first time and say to yourself "this guy is great, why haven't I heard of him before" Here's a fair warning...this new CD 'Shadow Dancing' just may change all that. His Scottish roots and Norway residence are belied by his vocals, which is pure American Dixie. From the opening track 'Running With A Heartache' through the twangy 'Aripeeka Bay' and onto the title track 'Shadow Dancing', you get the immediate impression that this guy has been more than just writing about life. The feeling he puts into his vocals leaves no doubt he's lived these songs. Those vocals carry the lament of 'Miss You Dear' the joyful 'Sweet Music', and the triumphant 'Stand And Deliver'. The tenth track 'Ballad Of Forest Gump' is a stirring view of America with haunting background vocals. Backed by strong musicians throughout, including an exceptional horn section on many of the songs, Steve Morgan has a potential classic here. If you like American folk and roots rock n roll, and you purchase one CD this year, this reviewer highly recommends it be "Shadow Dancing". Tom McGeady -
