ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Steven Graves Releases Seventh Full-Length Album, Captain Soul

Musician and cultural activist, Steven Graves creates music with authentic socially and spiritually conscious lyrics.

“American roots music, compellingly honest, beautifully crafted and fully realized songs ... this is really good stuff.” —Dennis McNally, Grateful Dead Publicist

Steven Graves has a knack for authenticity. His insight into the spiritual and emotional condition of being a human being are on embarking full-sail within his latest release, Captain Soul.

There is a spiritualism that permeates through Graves' compositions. He creates a social awareness and commentary that is seldom seen in rock and Americana today. Steven has worked closely with grassroots organizations helping Native American communities for several years culminating with a nomination for a Native America Music Award in 2012.

Graves has harnessed the support and guidance musical advocate and Grateful Dead publicist, Dennis McNally. McNally collaborated with the Grateful Dead for more than thirty years), the band has an ever-growing presence in the Grateful Dead and jam band circles.

Growing up on country music, Graves brings elements of country, folk rock, Gospel, as well as reggae into his music. “I love music that’s both rocking and nurturing,” Graves explains. He continues, “I'm guitarists ranging from Jerry Garcia to David Gilmour, even Lyle Lovett. Usually, I prefer music that is less abrasive to the psyche because I want the music to nurture me.”

In Captain Soul, Graves once again brings with him a group of seasoned and veteran musicians. His core group of accomplished session and band musicians consist of David Mendoza, (Lydia Pense & Coldblood,) and bassist, vocalist, and drummer David Tucker, (Tommy Castro, Maria Mauldar.) Saxophone player Armen Boyd, (Big Band Beat,) and singer Alysha Antonino, (Pete Escovido,) join Graves as well. Also, pianist Jon Dryden, (Norah Jones,) with pedal steel player Bruce Wandmayer (Trailer Park Troubadours,) gives Graves' band and album a real and genuine flavor.

Graves has often seen his songs hit the Americana and JamBand music charts. Captain Soul will prove no exception. Graves composed the album simultaneously as the band recorded it, so the recording and writing process became interwoven. "The project took on a life of its own," offers Graves. Steven Graves is also excited that the record was recorded entirely on old-school analog gear giving it that warm and fat sound that only real instruments and classic equipment can create!
