Album Notes
Like a twelve-pack of fine, bourbon barrel-aged stout, “The Road” features a dozen rich, full-flavored original tunes crafted over the last forty years by seasoned singer/songwriter/guitarist Steven J. Schmidt. Schmidt’s debut CD release, this album offers full-band arrangements of tunes Schmidt has written and performed at house concerts, coffee houses, and festivals as a solo artist.

Better known as an impresario and arts administrator, Schmidt has honed his fingerpicking and songwriting craft while performing professionally for more than forty years. In addition to writing over 200 songs, he has composed and performed musical soundtracks for public television, film and theatrical performances. He has also competed at the National Flatpicking Championship and National Fingerpicking Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas and his music has been featured on several university-affiliated National Public Radio affiliates. He has also been active as a performer, stage manager and host at the National Park Service’s "Border Folk Festival" and was involved in the 10th Anniversary Celebration for "A Prairie Home Companion," broadcast from the Chamizal National Memorial Theater (El Paso, TX). In addition, he has done session work for his many full-time artist friends including on the "I Have Seen Freedom" album folk music greats Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer produced for Si Kahn.

Other musicians featured on the album include John Wright on bass, who co-produced “The Road” with Schmidt. Wright founded New Folk Records and has produced/ engineered over 100 recordings by such international, national, and regional artists as Daithi Sproule (Altan), Grammy award winner Kevin Bowe, Tim Mahoney, Todd Menton, Laura Mackenzie, Paul Mayasich, among others. He tours nationally as a member of Lehto & Wright and The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra.

Daniel Neale joins Schmidt on guitars, banjo, mandolin and dobro. Neale has performed with Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band (“A Prairie Home Companion”), Shawn Colvin, Martin Zellar and the Hardways, Bo Diddley, Long John Baldry, Tiny Tim, Buzzy Linhart, The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra, and many others.

Ben Kaplan, who has played with Windham Hill guitar star Michael Hedges, fiddle legend Vassar Clements, Lovin’ Spoonful bassist Steve Boone, Little Feat leader Lowell George, British rocker Robert Palmer, Verdine White of Earth, Wind, and Fire, Mississippi blues legend Jessie Mae Hemphill, and Rock’n’Roll Hall of Famer Chuck Berry, performs on drums/percussion .

Steve Lehto performs on guitars, dobro and mandolin, has played professionally for more than thirty years in ensembles spanning many musical genres including pop, jazz, country, folk, and blues with such artists as The Rembrandts (“Friends” TV-show theme) the (then) Minnesota North Stars house band, Lehto & Wright, and Mick Sterling.

Elisa Wright performs on violin/fiddle. Ms. Wright is a native of Blooming Prairie, MN and has toured with Martin Zellar & The Hardways, Mick Sterling, Alison Scott, triple-platinum songwriter Kevin Bowe, and in her own band, The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra.
