ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Introduction
The theme of dreams connects most of these compositions, and also reflects a period in the soloist’s life. Being a professional euphonium soloist was a dream of a young Steven Mead, from the age of around 13, when the proficient young boy soprano found his new voice with this most sonorous of brass instruments.
Through his years of dedication to the euphonium his remarkable career has advanced steadily to the point now where he has an enviable worldwide reputation as a soloist, teacher and entrepreneur for his beloved instrument.
He is very proud of his connection with the Royal Northern College of Music which began back in 1990 when he was invited to teach there. Now celebrating twenty six of unbroken loyalty to the school, his studio now has a reputation second to none in the world of low brass music, and the school attracts players from all round the world. In 1995 the twenty six students making up the euphonium and baritone department came from ten countries worldwide. As thoughts of this album developed, Steve realised the connection between several of the works, and although there is great variety in the styles and accompanying forces employed, there is the dual thread of the theme of dreams and his connections with the RNCM.
This album was recorded in Studio 7 at the RNCM between the 22nd and 24 March 2016 and Steven wishes to thank not only the musicians involved, but all the staff from the school who have been so supportive and helpful in making this album possible.
Perhaps the most jaw-dropping tracks on this album are the eight pieces in the Rhapsodia set, which has a most interesting story and was an almost surreal experience for our soloist.
In November 2006 Steven was performing a concert in an Italian speaking part of southern Switzerland, near Lugano. It was an outdoor concert in a marquee in the town Square. The guest of honour was a grand lady of Italian fashion by the name of Giuliana Camerino. After the concert she invited him to her Villa where she wished to discuss an idea for her next fashion show in Milan, September 2007. To cut a very long story short, after many discussions, Steve was the featured instrumentalist in the Roberto di Camerino fashion house show, performing live on the catwalk while twenty two models showed off the latest in dress and accessory design. Giuliana requested that the music be based on Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, and our soloist was also requested to source and have the music arranged. Steven turned to the talented composer, RNCM alumni Pete Meechan who agreed to produce these works with synthesiser accompaniment, with added saxophone and drums in addition to more multi-tracked Mead. So these pieces require more, than any other works on the disc, the imagination of the listener. Try to picture a live audience of a thousand people divided by a runway featuring many of Italy’s leading young female models, and a lone British euphonium player walking up and down playing variations on Gershwin’s famous work for piano and orchestra!
