ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Two Feet On The Ground" represents my first two years living in New York City. These years were the most crucial and dynamic in not only my journey musically but also personally. As I searched to define who I am, I continued to find my footing, balance and the true understanding to my feelings and actions in life. New York felt like home in no time at all, I felt comfortable there, inspired there and met some of biggest heroes and peers, whom I know I will play with and be friends with for the rest of my life. My dreams and goals were starting to become more defined and as graduate school at NYU was coming to a close, I knew I wanted to step out into the world with an album to document my life up to this point. Something I can keep with me and could guide me in the right direction towards the unknown. With the help of a long time mentor, Ulysses Owens Jr., these dreams and desires would soon become a reality.
I decided to pick music from my favorite composers ranging from Monk, Gershwin and Ellington as well as original compositions by myself and members of the band. I wanted to approach each tune in a personal and honest way, representing what they truly mean to me.
I chose these specific musicians to play on the record for their unique sounds and personalities. Martin Wind, a teacher of mine at NYU was a huge influence ever since hearing him on records with Matt Wilson. His comfortable sound and feel was like nothing I've heard before. My time spent studying with him was equally as influential. He instilled the importance of being a musical drummer and to always play the melody above all. His creative mind really came through on his record, coming up with incredible suggestions for my arrangements and encouraged me to write my own music as well. While at NYU I met great trumpet player, Mike Rodriguez, who after hearing him play and talking to on many occasions, I knew I wanted to feature him on a few tunes. His musicianship and support in the studio meant so much to me.
The remaining members include two friends and former classmates, who I created a quick friendship with both on and off the bandstand. Joe Alterman is on the most swinging pianists I know. His positive energy makes it a joy to play with. I knew Guitarist Daan Kleijn for almost a year and half before we actually sat down to play. Once we finally had the opportunity, I immediately was inspired by his playing. His clear sound both soloing and comping is like nothing I've heard from my generation. He's the perfect example of knowing the history but still pushing it forward with his own voice.
I've truly exceeded every expectation I had for this record. I sought out to find my identity and in turn, defined who I am in a whole new way. Ultimately, I hope for people find joy from this record and help inspire them to move in the direction they always wished to go.
