Album Notes
"Flowers for My Friends" (a Single) by Steve Pullara & His Red Eared Sliderz:

If there is anybody in the children's music genre' with the Bob Dylan gene, it's Steve Pullara. He's always on point with kid's issues in many of his songs. Steve writes clever lyrics, develops strong melodies and has excellent production qualities with his band. He steps up to the plate and takes chances with his music. "Flowers For My Friends" is such a song and a fine example of Steve Pullara's & His Red Eared Sliderz Band's work. It tackles our nation's serious issue of the toy gun culture and few artists can create a song about this subject. With his award winning skills and credentials in the children's music genre, Steve Pullara is uniquely qualified to have written a song that sparks the national dialogue in this important subject. His song is written from a child's perspective, yet it's a window of viewing and listening even for adults who will hear it. The scenario in "Flowers For My Friends" is about a student whose class drills for school emergencies. Due to those exercises, that student who sings the narration in this song has trouble sleeping. The landscape of this piece does not take issues with the 2nd amendment as a law, but explores a different aspect in our culture. Our student in "Flowers For My Friends" becomes very aware that guns are not toys, but that many toys are guns. Why?...because his history class had a guest speaker for their school assembly. During the "Show & Tell" portion of that assembly, the guest speaker raised the student audience's awareness with examples in life to notice. Then, upon the conclusion of his presentation, the presenter asked every student in the auditorium an important question which is this song's hook. He asked, "Can you hear kids all day with their toys guns at play?" "Flowers For My Friends" is a solid song that raises awareness for children that guns are not toys, but that children do have many toy guns available to them everyday. These examples can be found in ways that are both obvious and not so obvious such as numerous video games, water guns and in role plays. Everybody's imaginations will be sparked for many more examples of toy weapons and amusements that will come to mind after hearing this song. "Flowers For My Friends" is a relevant and important piece of music that will spur discussions for our children, classrooms, libraries and families, plus it has valuable crossover appeal in many formats.
