Beyond Measures & Time

by Steve Rivera

Steve's goal is to create music that is open, leaving space for the listener to interpret and contemplate, transcending both "measures & time'. Having the listener receive and envision the music the same way that Steve did while composing it.

Album Notes
"As much as I love Steve Rivera’s debut, Dividing the Darkness, his solo piano Beyond Measures & Time overflows with that very special something that can come only from a sensitive soul at one with his piano, playing from the depths of his heart."

Kathy Parsons

"Whereas many piano players who market their music as “new age” often tend to avoid touching on darker moods and emotions, Steve Rivera’s tenderly introspective compositions perfectly elicit both light and shadowy atmospheres, with a command of dynamics that is rarely heard." ~ Candice Michelle, Journeyscapes Radio

"Steve Rivera, from the beginning of his career, has written some of the best piano music to be heard in the New Age genre. Steve has recently recorded a new album entitled, beyond measures & time, this time offering an album of intimate solos which bring us even closer to the soul of this brilliant artist." ~ Will Ackerman, Imaginary Road Studios

"Beyond Measures & Time" will charm you. Although nuanced with some scientific terms, this album is one for the romantics. ~ RJ Lannan, Artisan Music Reviews

From MainlyPiano
As much as I love Steve Rivera’s 2015 album, "Dividing the Darkness," his solo piano "Beyond Measures & Time" overflows with that very special something that can come only from a sensitive soul at one with his piano, playing from the depths of his heart. Produced by Will Ackerman and mixed and mastered by Tom Eaton at Ackerman’s Imaginary Road Studios, most of the eleven original tracks are on the quiet, slightly mysterious side. Reflective and often dreamy, there is nothing flashy about this album, but the simple directness and honesty of the music wrap the listener in a warm blanket of sound that soothes and uplifts - a peaceful respite to escape to whenever wanted or needed. Even the cover artwork is beautiful and slightly mysterious!

"Beyond Measures & Time" begins with “Suspended Dream,” a very relaxed piece with a gentle rolling rhythm and a beautifully uncomplicated melody that just trails off at the end. “Passing Shadows” is somewhat darker and more melancholy, brightening near the end as the shadows move on and allow the sun to shine through. The first part of “Unlocking the Moments” is on the quiet, wistful side - very open and delicate. The second movement ups the energy level a bit and then returns to the first theme - very lovely! “Spectrum of Thoughts” is a favorite. Dramatic and colorful, the spectrum of the title expresses a wide variety of thoughts and feelings within the music. “Falling Closer” opens with a very tender, expressive theme that is played mostly in the upper octaves of the piano. The second theme moves into the mid-range of the keyboard and seems to be speaking from the heart - a wordless soliloquy. The third theme becomes more dramatic and intense, often crossing into the deep bass of the piano before returning to the quieter mood of the first sections to close - a favorite! “From the Beginning” has a gently rhythmic walking tempo and makes me think of being out on a very pleasant stroll on a spring afternoon. “Dark Tides” is my favorite piece on the album. Somber, poignant and emotionally powerful, the left hand plays dark rolling chords that support a very spare but heartfelt melody. It reminds me a little bit of “Delicate Force” from Dividing the Darkness, which was my favorite piece on that album. I also really love “Fragmented Dreams,” a slow beauty that is on the intense, emotional side and evokes a variety of images in my mind. “Measures & Time” closes this excellent album on a dreamy, pensive note as it fades out at the end.

Although it has been almost three years since Steve Rivera released "Dividing the Darkness," "Beyond Measures & Time" was well-worth the wait! Very highly recommended!

Review from Aural Awakenings
Beyond Measures & Time is the follow-up album to pianist and composer Steve Rivera’s critically-acclaimed debut release entitled Dividing the Darkness. Whereas his prior album featured piano ensemble pieces that were variably accompanied by strings, horns and gentle percussion, Beyond Measures & Time is comprised entirely of eleven contemplatively engaging solo piano compositions, of which only further highlights the immense beauty of Steve’s signature compositional style. I’m also quite fond of the album’s captivating artwork with its slightly steampunk edge, which seems slightly out-of-the-box – yet very fitting – for the album’s overall concept.

Fittingly introducing this album is the gently contemplative “Suspended Dream”, which seemingly conveys a feeling of gradually waking up to sense the warm glow of a morning sunlight. One of my favorite pieces herein is the classical-accented second track “Passing Shadows”, which opens with softly-twirling figures in the higher register that eventually give way to a somewhat brighter yet contemplative melody, before eventually reverting to the composition’s initial motif. My absolute favorite piece however is the nocturnal and shadowy ninth track “Dark Tides”, which aptly conveys an overall darker undercurrent. Seemingly flowing along in a continuum with no defined beginning or end, this subtle piece dreamily drifts along like a boat sailing the waters, as it effectively alludes to both literal and metaphorical interpretations of ‘dark tides’.

Whereas many piano players who market their music as ‘new age’ will often tend to avoid touching on darker moods and emotions, Steve Rivera’s tenderly introspective compositions perfectly elicit both light and shadowy atmospheres with a command of dynamics that is rarely heard. And while Beyond Measures & Time frequently touches on more sensitive emotions throughout – both musically and thematically – ultimately, it is an album which conveys a satisfying sense of hope, comfort and fortitude!

Beautiful calm and ambient piano
Steve Rivera has made a steady progression in his musical career, I remember the intensity and emotion of his last offering Dividing The Darkness back in 2015, now he is back with a sparkling new release called Beyond Measures & Time.
On this new offering there seems to be a real connection with the soul and heart, a combination of emotive performances with such a beautiful arrangement and performance structure, all of that is here and more, like for example the supremely gentle and radiant opener Suspended Dream, simply the perfect starting composition.
Rivera has manifested something so emotive and meaningful on this new release, listening to tracks like Unlocking the Moments, is like pulling the curtains back on a brand new sun kissed day and the hope of better things to come.
The artist embraces a longer style in Falling Closer, a track filled with a pristine gentleness, creating space and ambience with such natural precision, then the fluent tones of pieces like Waves and Particles, both tracks creating a rock pool of ambient pleasure in their own way.
Life can be dualistic in nature and on arrangements like Dark Tides we see a musical toe being dipped into those murkier waters of emotive intensity, the performance here is sublime at creating a really introspective mood.
There can be no doubt that as a pianist Steve Rivera is on the rise in this genre and this album is a fine example of this steady and thoughtful progression. The last track of the album Measures & Time is perhaps a fine example of future musical foot paths that the artist may travel. This has to be one of the most spacious, calm and ambient releases on piano I have heard for some time, and an album that is so very easy and charming to listen to as well.

Both thought provoking and relaxing!
“Beyond Measures and Time” is solo pianist Steve Rivera’s second release. Like his critically acclaimed debut album “Dividing the Darkness” it was recorded at the legendary Imaginary Roads Studios and produced by Will Ackerman. The remarkable cover art (concept by Steve Rivera, photography by Scott Shelly, design and layout by Matt Strieby of Newleaf Design) perfectly sets the mood for the music inside. Introspective, shadowy and often dreamlike, this collection of intimate piano solos offers its listeners a glimpse into the mind and heart of a gifted and insightful composer and performer.

“Suspended Dream” makes use of the suspended chord, its lack of a third creating an open sound, the dissonance between the fourth and fifth creating tension. “Passing Shadows” is darker and more pensive, but flashes of light begin to flicker through as the piece reaches its inconclusive end. “Unlocking the Moments” begins quietly and thoughtfully but grows more epic and expansive in the middle before briefly returning to the opening theme. “Spectrum of Thoughts” is a great favorite, with contrasting melodies tossing back and forth like the thoughts that flit through our minds over a rich syncopated left hand accompaniment.

The expressive “Falling Closer” opens with a warm, lyrical melody followed by a beautiful second theme that grows increasingly passionate and dramatic then ends with a brief return to the first theme. Like the soundtrack to a great love story, this piece explores the full sonic range of the piano and is my favorite on the album. The meandering “In My Own Memories” is followed by “Waves and Particles” and is a reflection on the complex quantum physics topic of wave/particle duality. Listening, I could almost see particles of dust sparkling like glitter in a ray of light.

“From the Beginning” is composed in the minimalist style, its repetitive left hand pattern and pulsing tempo reminding me of the ticking of a clock, eventually fading away to nothingness. “Dark Tides” features a poignant melody supported by rich bass arpeggios that flow like ocean waves. Another favorite, “Fragmented Dreams” is slow and mysterious, successive melodic ideas interrupting or overlapping previous ones in a most interesting fashion. The title track, “Measures & Time,” is another treasure, both transcendent and hypnotic and bringing the album to a spellbinding end.

With “Beyond Measures and Time,” Steve Rivera has created an album that is both thought provoking and relaxing. Highly recommended!
