ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Stev Fargan became interested in creating music while studying film at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. Making student films created a desire to make his own soundtracks and he sought out a wide variety of musical experiences. His coursework in music included Electronic Music, Music as a Creative Experience, Music Merchandising, Piano, and Composition. In his first Electronic Music class he had the pleasure of working on one of the early Moog Modular Synthesizers. In that class he also met Bret Hamilton. They collaborated on many pieces of music. Together they formed the Bolsheviks of Madrid. Stev’s interest in music was also encouraged by Jason Ringenberg, who taught him how to be a soundman for some of his bands that included Shakespeare’s Riot, The Catalinas, and even an early gig for Jason and the Scorchers. This led to sound and lighting work with other local bands including The Rollaways, The Boppin’ 88s, as well as David and the Happenings.

After graduating from Southern Illinois University, Stev bought a one-way ticket to California. He headed west for the first time with only four things: a ten-speed bicycle in a box, one suitcase full of clothes, his Moog Sonic Six suitcase synthesizer, and a desire for new experiences. He enrolled in graduate school at Mill’s College and took courses in Electronic Music and Studio Recording. Other new experiences out west included competing for two years in springboard diving, becoming a certified scuba diver, skydiving, and finding another passion, downhill skiing.

His frequent trips to ski around Lake Tahoe led to his moving to northern Nevada to be closer to the mountains. His passion for skiing is year-round. In addition to winter skiing, he hikes up with skis on a backpack and patch skis in the spring, summer, and autumn. As of August 2018, he will be extending his consecutive month skiing streak to 178 months.

While making videos of his skiing adventures, his passions have come full circle. The desire to make soundtracks for skiing videos led to the creation of his first album release, Soundtracks In Search Of A Film.

"Liner" notes:
1. Conjunction
This is the opening track of Soundtracks In Search Of A Film. I would describe it as having connecting or intersecting themes.
Instrumentation – Synthesizers, Bass, Clavinet, Strings, Electronic Drums

2. Trail Ride
This started as a drive toward rockabilly that shifted into sort of a “Western Twang” sound. I’m pretty happy and take pride in the guitar sounds I was able to achieve on a computer keyboard.
Instrumentation – Drums. Upright Bass, Clavinet, Guitars

3. Zarameyuki Cycles
Zarameyuki is the Japanese word for “corn snow.” Corn snow is my second favorite type of snow to ski, with fresh powder being my favorite. For corn snow to develop there needs to be cycles of melting and freezing of snow which often occurs in the spring. This song goes through three sections or cycles representing the early morning freeze followed by a melt or thaw and then ends with a refreeze or setup in the evening.
Instrumentation – Synthesizers, Orchestral Kit, Harp, Marimbas, Orchestral Choir Voices, Upright Bass

4. Theme Book
This track explores turning pages and transitioning through different themes.
Instrumentation – Clavinet, Upright Bass, Drums, Piano, Vibraphone, Glockenspiel, Orchestral Kit, Strings, Acoustic Guitar, Harp

5. Approaches
This is one of my favorite tracks. It reminds me of being in sort of a rhythmic trance while hiking up to find snow patches to ski.
Instrumentation – Synthesizers, Marimba

6. This Robe
What I would imagine hearing if a Rasta version of Ric Flair was entering the wrestling ring.
Instrumentation – Drums, Organ, Guitar, Bass, Chinese Kit, Marimba, Vibraphone, Piano, Clavinet, Brass

7. Recovery
I recorded this track immediately after oral surgery. I hope it sounds better than I felt that day.
Instrumentation – Drums, Synthesizers

8. Consecutive Catch
This track moves in circular motions and has the feel of being in the zone to throw and catch Gel boomerangs. This might also work well for a time-lapse piece.
Instrumentation - Synthesizers

9. Let’s Go Bowling
This song has being playing in my head in its entirety for many years. It feels so good get out this demo version. This is the only vocal track on Soundtracks In Search Of A Film.
Instrumentation – Drums, Brass, Strings, Upright Bass, Piano, Organ, Guitar, Vocals

10. Cicadas Crawling
This could be a macro photography soundtrack for moving insects.
Instrumentation – Electronic Drums, Piano, Synthesizers, Orchestral Kit

11. West By Southwest
This track with a jazzy feel was recorded while flying across the country back home to Nevada on Southwest Airlines flights.
Instrumentation – Pianos, Synthesizer, Vibraphone, Orchestral Choir, Marimba, Saxophone, Drums, Bass Guitar, Upright Bass

12. Tunnel
Driving up to, through, and then out of a tunnel.
Instrumentation – Synthesizers, Electronic Drums, Drums

13. Alliance
This track is a connection of peace and energy.
Instrumentation – Synthesizers, Marimba, Vibraphone, Orchestral Choir

14. Concealment
Hiding from those who seek.
Instrumentation – Synthesizers, Marimba, Vibraphone, Glockenspiel

15. Shoulder On My Sunshines
This was originally a slower track that matched giant slalom turns through soft snow in the Canadian Rockies. After being sped up a bit, it is more like slalom turns powered by two large cups of Tim Horton’s coffee.
Instrumentation – Drums, Clavinet, Saxophone, Guitar

16. Above The Fog
On many days while up on mountain peaks near Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada there are great views of the lake. On some other days you can look down at fog or the tops of clouds.
Instrumentation – Synthesizers, Electronic Drums

17. Go East
I recorded most parts of this while flying from Reno to Chicago and then Chicago to Hartford. I did the final mix of this track in a snow-covered cabin in Vermont.
Instrumentation – Synthesizers, Organ, Piano, Electronic Drums, Bass, Orchestral Choir

18. Description
This is a soundtrack for the blissful floating sensation of skiing deep powder on a cold, but sunny day.
Instrumentation – Synthesizers, Orchestral Kit, Chinese Kit

19. Candlelit
Taking whole steps while tiptoeing through cobwebs in a haunted house.
Instrumentation – Piano, Clavinet, Organ, Synthesizer, Bass, Erhu, Strings, Marimba, Vibraphone, Drums, Pipa, Percussion

20. Bead Fade
This is a soundtrack for skiing secret powder stashes.
Instrumentation – Synthesizers, Electronic Drums

21. Rebaggaged
I came up with many of the themes for this track while waiting at the airport due to flight delays.
Instrumentation – Bass, Synthesizers, Electronic Drums, Drums, Chinese Kit, Orchestral Kit

22. Rolling Credits
Don’t get up right away when the film ends, sit through the credits and you may see someone you know in the credits, or find out something you didn’t know before.
Instrumentation – Drums, Guitars, Bass, Pianos, Organs, Tambourines

Nostalgia
Soundtracks in Search of a Film is the perfect title for this album. I grew up as a child in the 1980s and listening to this album is nostalgic. It sounds like the music from my favorite 80s movies and tv shows. My favorite track is "Let's Go Bowling;" it's stuck in my head.
