Album Notes
This is the fourth CD by the St. Michael's the Archangel Catholic Church Music Ministry RVA (Richmond Virginia). Anyone who has attended mass at 'St. Mikes' (located in Glen Allen VA, a Richmond suburb) has noticed the lively and spirited music that accompanies and deepens the liturgies there. Offering an eclectic blend of contemporary, chant, gospel and traditional church music, the St. Mikes' Music Ministry leaves folks with a melody on their lips and a song in their hearts no matter the liturgical season.

This CD was produced in celebration of St. Mikes 25th anniversary as a parish. In 1994 Tom Kaczmarek joined the parish as Director of Music. In the years since, St. Mikes has established a reputation as a welcoming and singing congregation. Imagine what a joyous celebration Easter Sunday must be withe St. Mikes family of musicians gathered together and the assembly thundering out "This Is the Day"--the first tune on this CD. With the rhythm section rockin', the brass blaring, the choir singing like angels, Jenny Ivens lead vocals proclaiming the text, and Fr. Dan Brady--our singing presider--dancing in the aisles, how can anyone keep from singing?

Over the past 25 years, St. Mikes has been blessed with the many talented musicians/singers that call St. Mikes home--musicians of all ages and levels of experience. Joe Sarver, bassist extraordinaire, offers his own brand of percolating pulse to the CD--and he's present every Sunday (for over a decade) providing the same level of virtuoso musicianship in person. William Raposo and his family grace the CD with their string ensemble, The Short Pump Symphonette. Like Joe, they have been present at Christmas and Easter services for over a decade. Check out David Raposo's gorgeous cello sound at the end of "I Will Rise". When David started playing cello for us, he wasn't as tall as his instrument. He had to stand on a chair to tune it! Some of our brass players have been with us for over 20 years; Sir Michael Davison is Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Richmond--he plays in exchange for Packer tickets! Mark Walton--T-bone1--is a pilot for Delta, he flew F-16s in the Virginia National Guard and is an avid Chicago (the band) fan. And finally Al Waters, a favorite at St. Mikes since 1994, rounds out the instrumental roster. Al is master woodwind player who toured in Ray Charles' big-band for 10 years. He offers his unique and world-class talents on flute (This Is the Day), soprano sax (Taste and See and Christ Be Our Light) and clarinet (A Voice Proclaims).

St. Mikes features some of the best choral singing and lead vocalists you'll find anywhere. This CD features the inspiriing lead vocals of Jenny Ivens, Sandi Nguyen, Julia Niedermaier and Laura Stapleton. In addition, St. Mike's 50+ member choir offers superb choral singing (A Voice Proclaims, The Holly She Bears a Berry), fleshing out the arrangements with a warm tone and enthusiastic praise. The choir features many 20+years members, as well as High School students and young adults fresh out of college. All are welcome.

Together, our singers/musicians rock, (check out This Is the Day, Daughter of God, There Is a Time, Blessed Be Your Name), they do a knock-out version of classic/pop anthem singing (There Is a Time), they swing (Christ, Be Our Light), they extol and praise (Taste and See) and they offer the most consoling of pastoral encouragement (I Will Rise).

All families grow, and the St. Mikes' Music Family grew recently with the addition of bells and ringers (Today Is Born Our Savior). Under the direction of Jenny Ivens, the bells have added a fresh color and sound to St. Mikes' Christmas and Easter celebrations that has been remarkable for its impact in such short time.

The St. Mikes' Music Ministry is truly a family affair--and if you sing or play at St. Mikes, you're part of the family--no way out.

If you are hungry for the best in what local church music ministries can attain if they set their sights on the higher things, this CD is for you. Enjoy! And be sure to share it with your brothers and sisters in Christ. If you're ever in town, come join us in sung prayer as we raise the roof at St. Michael Catholic Church in Glen Allen VA. You too can be part of the family! Or, you can simply buy the CD, and sing along in your cars and homes, you'll still be considered family.

This CD was recorded at 9WG Studios (Red Amp Audio) in RIchmond VA. It was engineered and recorded by Jody Boyd and produced by Jody Boyd and Tom Kaczmarek--friends and family who have been making music on and off together since 1979.
Please, enjoy.
