ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Ever awake to a dawn difficult to reconcile with the ponderous memory of yesterday? The songs on Joe Strell's "Enormous Morning" capture the fragile, yet optimistic hope that maybe life isn't as futile as it might otherwise seem. Strell's lyrical intensity provides a grounded counterpoint to the melodic blend of guitars, mandolin, and ukulele in an alternative/folk album of catchy yet contemplative gems.

Joe Strell wields melody and metaphor to unveil the turbulent realms of human emotion, relationships, and existence. Composed with acoustic instruments including guitar, mandolin, and ukulele, his songs combine traditional folk technique with an alternative sensibility to deliver a message with wit and sensitivity. The imagery of his lyrics strikes deep, complementing the cool depths of his musical seascape with personal revelation that evokes the universal.

"I found the name for this album in a line of a poem called 'Five Flights Up' by Ellizabeth Bishop. For me, 'Enormous Morning' expresses the puzzling epiphany that life can continue after great tragedy. It's a new day, and although the memory of the past is nearly overwhelming, there can be hope." -- Joe Strell

A longtime member of the alternative music scene and no stranger to independent record labels, Joe Strell is yet another alumni of the new wave / art rock band Ack-Ack, whose members included Lynn Canfield (Area, Moon Seven Times, Shot Gun Wedding), Henry Frayne (Area, Moon Seven Times, Lanterna), and Brendan Gamble (Sylvia Darling, Poster Children, Stark, Moon Seven Times, Shotgun Wedding), as well as the avant garde masters Tim Stephens and Brian Reedy (Lonely Trailer). In addition to his work on Split Heavens, a studio project with a number of releases on independent labels, and Sylvia Darling, his collaboration with Brendan Gamble, Strell has worked with many of his former alumni on their respective musical efforts over the years.
