Album Notes
This album is the culmination of several years of music production and experimentation.

Each song took about one month to produce. I have dozens of songs, but only the top 8 from my last year of work made it into “Cacophony.” Some songs were too short, some didn’t fit the theme. (Some were “meh.”) I create songs in my DAW using a midi keyboard and an Akai MPC Studio instrument. I use chord triggers, midi files, and loops. About a quarter of my time is spent on instrument and sound selection, the other three-quarters on arrangement and mix.

All the time, when I’m working on a song, I’m trying to make something positive and uplifting. When I listen to music, at the end, I want to feel good.

A song starts out as a sort of concept, what would I like to achieve, something unique.

Real EDM. I’ve always liked the sound of the traditional Chinese erhu instrument, and in this song I thought I’d try to incorporate it into a club style track. It’s the most laid-back track in the album.

Love Is Chaos. I purchased some vocal loops from an artist going by the name of “Tonka.” Fantastic voice! I wanted to include her voice in a song. Now, when I listen to “Love,” I can’t decide ... is this an SOS song, or should I call it a Tonka song?

Cacophony. I wanted a real release of energy, something that could build and build, then come crashing down while maintaining momentum, then build back up.

Erhu Going To The Dance. Back to my fascination with the erhu. Okay, to be fair, this track is mostly loops. I did the drums, percussion, some manipulation of the erhu and, of course, the arrangement and mix (not to be underestimated). So I can’t claim full credit for the sounds per se. It still took a lot of time to get it right. But I believe the end result is so unique and catchy that it was worth inclusion in this album.

Get Out There. Here I go again into another experimental EDM track. LOL. You wouldn’t believe how this started out. (Hint: didgeridoo.) It didn’t work with the original instrument selections, but I still liked the feel of it, so I pulled the original instruments, kept most of the chord progressions and drums, and basically rearranged and remixed it all.

At The Top Of Your Voice. This is an evolved song. Nothing ever seems to come easy in the song creation process. I had a catchy melody that seemed, somehow, to be missing something. I experimented, and finally decided the choir worked very well.

Rise. I like the idea of builds / crescendos in music. Get more pumped as a song progresses. And who doesn’t like screeching guitars? I thought it would be cool to include both in an uplifting piece with a real EDM feel to it. Don’t think it has been done before.

Move It. While working with some midi files and getting nowhere, I decided to use a new synth just purchased. It sort of all came together from that point. This is a high energy song with a real positive, uplifting feel to it.

I hope this album brings enjoyment to everyone that listens.
