Album Notes
Safe Harbor - Healing KIrtan - Mahaprasad

Traditionally sankirtana, or kirtan, as we refer to it in the West, is a form of devotional chanting, sung in a call and response fashion, from India. As in the evolution of country music, kirtan is an expanding category that has grown to include many subgenres and styles, as different artists explore its many dimensions with new rhythms and melodies. I have incorporated traditional melodies with new ones arising in my heart. The Mahalakshmi Ashtakam is a very auspicious traditional chant to the goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of spiritual and material wealth. This ancient hymn brings abundant blessings to any environment where it is chanted. May you be blessed by the healing intention that is the basis of this recording. Mahaprasad means "the highest fruits of spiritual blessings."

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare

In my favorite ashram, the men sing Hare Ram first, and then the women sing Hare Krishna. Usually it begins with Hare Krishna.

O MahaLakshmi! Primordial Goddess of Infinite Infinitude and Grace! Seated in the Lotus of Fortune, radiant in white, wielding a conch, bejeweled, atop Garuda, the giant Eagle of Vishnu, and bestowing all abundance, bukti and mukti, worldly and spiritual liberation! You are the very form of the mantra removing all sins, and dissolving all frustration! Beyond waking and dreaming, beyond the gross and subtle bodies, you are the center of the center of the Self of All. We bow to you, MahaLakshmi!

The yearning for love echoes deep in the mountain valley of our heart.

Safe Harbor / Radhe Radhe Radhe Shyam

You’ve got a Band of Angels… looking after you!
You’ve got Magical Friends… looking after you!
When I trust what I feel, more than my thinkin’,
I feel safe inside, like Wynken and Blynken.

That’s why music is, religion to my body
That’s why music is, safe harbor for my soul
Maybe a beginning, maybe a middle or end,
Kind of like a song, or maybe like a friend.

That there’s an invisible dimension
That contains, sustains and maintains the tension
of our heart song healing and loving intention, yeah!

Earth is spinning at a perfect speed.
She’s taking care of our every need.
It’s all music and it’s all art

The composer of this song was a slave ship captain who had an epiphany, sailed back to Africa and released his slaves. Similarly, may we release our minds from bondage!
