ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The music we play is improvised, in the moment. Like birds, we are closely following and supporting one another. We go on a journey, diving into the unknown, discovering the music as it unfolds, with the intention to allow the music to comfort, relax, inspire, energize and bring healing to the body and mind of our listeners.

On this album, we are happy to be collaborating with gifted friends bringing more colors to our music: Larry Walker on electric keyboard and percussion, Kathleen Farell and Judson Cunningham on crystal bowls, Shivpreet Singh on vocals and bansuri, and Laura Inserra on hang drum and frame drum.

Suellen Primost, a seasoned cellist, recording artist, composer and sound healer, is known for her soulful expressivity and versatility across genres ranging from classical and jazz to many types of world music: Celtic, Roma, Arabic and Indian Classical. She has played on 4 film scores, performed with jazz greats Jeff Oster, Herbie Hancock, John Santos and Roger Glenn, eco-poet Drew Dellinger, Indian artists Shivpreet Singh and Ravichandra Kalur, and with the Artship Ensemble (for over a decade throughout the Bay Area and at theatre festivals in Prague and Belgrade.) Currently Suellen performs with The Murmurations Duo, The Murmurations Ensemble, Spiral Dance Chamber Jazz, Ya L’ayl, Hardly Strictly Jazz, Eostar Kamala, Mori Achen, Clare Hedin, Laura Inserra, Larry Walker, Soul Tones and The Espiritu Ensembles.

Jérémy Marais, born and raised in the French Alps, started to play saxophone as a child and soon developed a strong interest in improvised music. He has lived and studied traditional music in various parts of the world: West Africa, Spain, India, Turkey and Israel. In addition to performing on alto and baritone sax, Jérémy, a multi-instrumentalist, also plays frame drum, balafon and clarinet. He played and recorded with Israeli bands Sumsumband, Madboojah project, Portuguese band Terrakota, Burkina Faso band Farafina, Indian band Rajasthan Roots. While living in France, Jérémy opened for musicians like Louis Sclavis, Rabi Abu Khalil, Michel Godard.
He tours each year throughout North America with the fabulous and very popular Jerusalem-based group, Nava Tehila. He is a member of the Murmurations Duo and is a certified CIIS sound healer, ThetaHealing practitioner and instructor, he does private healing sessions and also teaches musical improvisation for groups. Jérémy is now living with his wife and young son in the Bay Area.

The Murmurations Duo is available for still or moving meditations, retreats, recordings, sound healing sessions, yoga and movement classes, festivals and performances. For more information or bookings, contact Jeremy Marais at: maraisjeremy@yahoo.fr or Suellen Primost at sprimost@aol.com

Starlings Soars
The new Starlings CD by the Murmurations Duo is a lush meditative offering from two virtuoso improvisers, Suellen Primost on cello and Jeremy Marais on clarinet, saxophone and balafon with friends on vocals, keyboard, drums, bansuri, uttar, tabla and crystal bowls. In the tradition of world music, this album draws on sounds from different cultures. It also tells a story, describing the experience of meeting the Beloved and drawing closer to one’s spiritual home. I’ve been playing Starlings almost continuously for the past week, following its flight from a soft mindfulness, through an interplay of notes and silence, to a dance of longing and fulfillment, each song embodying the fierce, gentle passion you find in a Rumi poem.
If physicians prescribed music for our general health and wellbeing, this CD would be #1 on our playlist. Listeners will feel supported, centered, enchanted and refreshed--and closer to their own creativity.

Starlings mumurations soothing and sweet.
"You know starlings as I recall usually gather in large flocks in the fall and after flying in circles for a few weeks to build up their strength they eventually head south to live out the winter in warmer climes. But I had a small flock come flying through my mailbox today and into my house and they started singing and filling the house with the sweetest sounds. Its quite magical. Their mumurations are soft and resonant and tonifying to our souls. How sweet it is.”

expansive, sourcerous and experimentally beautiful
Of all the musical instruments, nothing defines the space better than a cello. Every brush of the bow on a string sets the very existence of your being. I may be sounding like making sweeping statements, but the depth and the range that the sound of a cello offers often replicates the stillness of one’s mind–sitting quietly and restfully in a meditative state. And when you consciously listen to it, you feel as if you are holding the music like a thread and floating in the limitless space.

Now, add sudden deflections, unpredictable yet prestine movements, and quickly-changing patterns of saxophone to it, and you will get a rich mixture of murmurations.

This is what’s on offer in this CD. Suellen Primost on cello and Jeremy Marais on saxophone take you to a journey that is inward. The path may not appear smooth yet these starlings know exactly what and when to do the movements.

The music of the album is expansive, sourcerous and experimentally beautiful.

Being an Indian and avid listener of classical music, I simply relish the idea of improvisation. The best feature of this album is that all of the music is improvised. The very concept of improvisation is challenging, difficult, tough yet brings out the best of any artist. The spontaneity of a thought is captured in the notes, and the music and the musician becomes one, unintentionally.

Listening to this album, often, you are reminded of the song that Shambhu Vineberg, George Brooks and Ravichandra Kulur created in Shambhu’s first CD named ‘Sacred Love’. The song, a total improvisation, was a brilliant piece and remains my favorite of that album. It was named ‘Shiva Grove’. I could feel transported to another realm of existence while listening to some of the pieces of this album. The first one, Inner Space, is especially enchanting!

The album has eleven tracks and each one of them offers you a new paradigm that you can savor. The accompanying artists have added the extra musings that a listener would cherish as the mind flows with the music.

Overall, the duo has done justice to the name, and offer a super collection of music suitable for relaxation, meditation and healing purposes.

I wish them the very best, and dream that they continue to fly together and offer more spectacles to us through their gifts.
