ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"...The highlight of the album (One At A Time) is an unaccompanied version of the song" Caledonia", which really exposes Matthews' marvelous lyrical phrasing and vocal qualities to the fullest effect.

She is a jazz vocalist deserving more attention on both sides of the Atlantic." (David Griffiths, South Wales Evening Post)

"Vocalist Sue Matthews first appeared in 1991, releasing the traditional jazz album Love Dances that year. Her smoky croon caught on with audiences and two years later, her When You're Around scored her another hit. She spent most of the 90's touring behind these two albums and appeared at every sort of jazz showcase or festival she could make it to. Finally, in 2002, ONE AT A TIME brought her back to the world of jazz recording." (Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide).

ONE AT AT TIME shows the variety and musical depth of this talented performer. An agenda of jazz standards, traditional pop, some cabaret and blues are all approached with innate appreciation of intimacy and savoir-faire. "Sue Matthews is a jazz vocalist with class and a great sweet style...her articulation and phrasing is as perfect and clear as they come..." (Lee Prosser, jazzreview.com. "She has the ability to use her band members to her best advantage. Example: she hones in on the melodically rich and lyrically tender "My Romance" with a strong and equal participation from pianist Stefan Scggiari as well as trading phrases with guitarist Gerry Kunkel. Because of her willingness to share the song, musicians must like to work with her putting her in a class of vocalists that a Helen Merrill belongs to. This album is highly recommended. (Dave Nathan, allaboutjazz). "...if you want to hear a fine jazz vocalist in a showcase setting for her talent, please listen to Sue Matthews sing on ONE AT A TIME then purchase a second CD for a loved one. Sue Matthews gives a memorable performance on "Here's To Life" that will linger in the listeners' minds long after the the song is finished. Topnotch collection." (Lee Prosser, jazzreview.com)

Matthews' performance credits are varied from the top Mid-Atlantic jazz clubs, concert halls, jazz festivals and television studios, to these highlights: featured artist with the Calgary Philharmonic,Canada; Mid-Atlantic Jazz Showcase at the annual JazzTimes Convention; Seventh Annual Cabaret Convention held at New York City's Town Hall; seven-time featured artist at the Clifden ArtsWeek Festival, County Galway, Ireland; toured Hungarian schools by invitation of the Fulbright Commission showcasing American jazz and blues with her group Guys & Doll; two-time recipient of the Maryland States Arts Council Individual Artist Award in Solo Vocal Performance.

"Sue Matthews...a bona fide jazz singer. Her phrasing is a dream...her articulatin's razor-sharp." (JazzTimes)
"Matthews shines on the ballads, caressing the lyrics and letting the music do what it's supposed to to." (L.A. JazzScene)

One at a Time
I heard Sue Matthews sing "Caledonia" at a cocktail party in Mexico and was deeply impressed. She enjoys an impeccable musicality, fabulous diction, and a real feeling for the lyrics of a song. Hearing her sing a capella with a natural poise and terrific sense of beat told me that this was a first-rate performer. Sent chills down my spine What a pleasure to now own her albums.

This is my second Sue Matthews CD from CD Baby. I liked the selections on the first one better however both CD's illustrate her voice range and beaty.
