ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Suntrodden was born in 2013 as the songwriting vehicle for Erik Stephansson. His simple indie pop has been described as “the calm before a storm” highlighted by “shimmering acoustic focused production that’s easy to fall in love with.” Suntrodden’s initial release (I) came in February 2016. It marked the first release of a planned three-part suite of EPs.

Now comes Suntrodden II – When talking about the new songs, Erik says, “The first EP had a little darkness on its edges. I started to melt the shadows away and let some light into the songs. This one feels brighter and relaxed – more hopeful.” When Erik sings “We shake off the morning’s afterglow” on the chiming opening-track Wake Up, the bright guitar tones and soft, soothing vocals gently shake the listener awake.

The five songs on II took shape on a 100 year-old piano filled with warm family spirits before being fully-realized in Erik’s Atlanta-based Echo Bright Studios. Erik again adopted a minimalist approach to production, but added shimmering organs and warm analog synths to flesh out the skeletal instrumentation. His songs remain a “love letter to stripped down songwriting” with streamlined song structures that highlight Erik’s thoughtful lyrics.

While Elliott Smith and Beach House continue to be stylistic touchstones, ‘90s alternative rock luminaries such as the Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana also shape II with each song being patterned after Erik’s favorite artists from that era. Lyrically, Erik tapped themes from Surrealist paintings and literature to bend the perspective of his writing.

With II, Suntrodden’s hazy vision has expanded, but the well-crafted songwriting has remained sharp. If I carried the listener “off into a dream,” II includes the spectral songs for basking in the morning after.
