Album Notes
Winter Tracks takes a distinctive approach to the holiday album concept by spanning the whole season: from Thanksgiving to Hanukkah to Christmas and New Year’s, combining holiday classics with fresh seasonal music.

Teaming up with long-time collaborator, Christopher McGovern, Egan’s goal is to take the listener on a chronological journey and also instill the sense of anticipation, joy, love, and peace that the season represents. Quieter than her usual Broadway Fare, Winter Tracks still stays true to Egan’s musical roots blending great story-telling with a light acoustic feel. The album showcases holiday classics reinterpreted as well as new surprises from some of New York’s and Hollywood’s most prolific writers: Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz, Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty , Cyndi Lauper, Georgia Stitt and McGovern himself.

Egan states, “I really wanted to create an album that could both inspire festivity and also instill tranquility during a decidedly hectic season. I have always loved the holidays, but I especially treasure time spent at home preparing – wrapping gifts, cooking – with soothing music to accompany me. I hope this recording can provide those kinds of moments for people. I also spend each December singing holiday music in countless concerts, and I always love discovering something new. I’ve been ‘collecting’ these hard-to-find originals for a few years now and am thrilled to bring them together here on Winter Tracks and placing them alongside my favorite standards!”

Notes from Christopher:
Many "year-round" thanks to: Mischa for patience & love; Brilliant musicians & singers for magical work; The on/offline press community for continued support; Arthur's beautiful finishing touches; Craig ("HCC"), Kent ("NY Baby") & Danny's clique for tips and suggestions; Dear friends who listen to the work "evolve" - over all the drafts; Karen for a fab job; Those wonderful, loyal, nutty Egan-ities; Lee for "bendable deadlines" & always taking calls; And of course to my Sus (PF)...What a journey! I raise a Glass of Merry to you for times gone by & those yet to come. This album is dedicated to my Mom, and to the memory of my Dad - who dearly loved the holiday season.

Notes from Susan:
This project came together in such unusual, but highly entertaining circumstances: from a last-minute conception to final deadlines that would stop a moose in his tracks. We began recording in July 2006 on a day of record-breaking, 100-degree, New York City swelter! Because one cannot run an air conditioner while recording (too noisy), I literally sang winter/snowy/holiday tunes wearing a drenched tank top and cut-offs. Needless to say, Christopher and I have no “in studio” photos here – be thankful!

Still, the process was a joy in every wacky way. Our mission: to create a CD that celebrates the whole of winter, incorporating holiday classics with new seasonal tunes from writers we love … hopefully inspiring new favorites. Our listening recipe? Play the CD while baking cookies or spending time with family and friends … um, eating cookies.

Many thanks to John Kelly who inspired the album; to the incredible composers and lyricists (many personal friends who I’m grateful trust us with their tunes once again); to my marvelous pal Karen who made it beautiful to see; to the overwhelmingly wonderful folks on the website and myspace who keep me honest and laughing(!); to my family and especially Liz who assisted with the Hebrew over a delish dinner in NYC; to Craig, Mischa, Dasch and the boys who kindle ideas and buy my drinks; to my guy, Rob and a little guy yet to be; and of course to dear Christopher who slaved far more than I, who worked magic in every note, and whose creativity and friendship I cherish. This was made with much joy and love, and we now give it to you in a season where both these reign. Let’s make it true the whole year through. Smiles, Sus

Critical Praise for Winter Tracks:

American Theatre Web
by Andy Propst

Another holiday-time disc comes from Susan Egan, who originated the role of 'Belle' in "Beauty and the Beast." Her disc "Winter Tracks" has a baker's dozen of beautifully rendered songs for this time of year – ranging from "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" to a beautiful medley of "Silent Night" and "Greensleeves."

Not all of Egan's selections are traditional. There are several terrific tracks on this disc that take a more contemporary approach to the holidays. A particular favorite is "The Turkey and the Stuffing," which imagines a decidedly BoHo approach to a holiday meal, making it about the love shared between a couple and not the gastronomic trimmings. Egan also includes a new "standard" – "All Those Christmas Cliches." Egan also includes a song from Lynn Ahrens and Alan Menken's "A Christmas Carol" – "God Bless Us Everyone."

"Turkey" is by the album's co-producer, orchestrator and arranger, Christopher McGovern, who makes sure that each of the songs on "Winter Tracks," fits Egan's voice and interpretation perfectly.

Susan Egan: Winter Tracks (LML Music) Complete with Christopher McGovern's "The Turkey and the Stuffing," the first seasonal song I've heard to bask in brand recognition, Egan lends her fetchingly sweet voice to an enjoyable collection of contemporary Christmas tunes plus the token Jewish prayer. A fine disc for the start of a winter's evening with those you love.
