Album Notes
Susan Leigh Picking- Bio

Susan Picking began her musical training in Southwestern Michigan. While growing up in the midwest she studied classical piano and cello. Susan didn’t start singing until she moved to California in 1996 when she began formal vocal training. Her Irish heritage drew her to traditional celtic music and Sean nos singing. She joined a Southern California Celtic band named Crannog. She continued study at Long Beach City College, studying songwriting. Susan’s biggest songwriting influences are 70’s folk rock...with the likes of Carole King,James Taylor, Van Morrison, Billy Joel, and Joni Mitchell. Based in Long Beach, California, Picking performs at coffee shops, bars, private parties, and conventions in the Greater LA area. She will perform solo with the piano, or with flexible ensembles. She still performs traditional Irish music and sang with the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra in March of 2007. The CD Down in Your Soul is Susan Leigh Picking’s first release. The soulful songs are inspired by lessons faced in the journey of life. Arranged with varied American influences.....folk, pop, jazz, bluegrass, and even acapella.

Very Strong!
“I Pray” is a middle of the road singer/songwriter meditation on wanting the world to be a better place. Susan Picking sings with a strong voice! Picking displays a quiet intensity that is hard to ignore while referencing a general spirit guide that gets her though even the darkest days.

A real discovery
I met Susan in the bar of the Isle Ornsay Hotel on the Isle of Skye a couple of years ago where a local musician was strumming his guitar. Susan asked if she could sing along and soon enchanted everyone present with her renditions of some Scottish songs. This CD is clearly a different genre but the purity of Susan's voice and her fine musicianship are no less enchanting. The songs are evocative and merit close listening. Their sentiments are eternal and will resonate widely.

For the lovers of soulful lyrics, and a emotion you can almost feel through the headphones. Her writing in each song tapped into a different period and lesson in my own experience. Susan moves effortlessly from folk, to blues/jazz, to blue-grassy bop. Congrats to Susan- I loved it. Sideways is an absolutely beautiful track and The Constant Light is wonderful driving music. Feels Good features beautiful horns and reminds me of a soundtrack to a movie...

Totally impressed
When I first heard Susan sing in person, it felt like she had touched my soul. I was so impressed especially after listening to this album many times, that I sought her professional help with a joint venture. She has a unique voice, a gentle yet powerful sound that adapts to a variety of styles, yet is always so fresh and purely entertaining on many levels. This is a very special album that lightens the load on your mind. It's a keeper.

such a voice
beautiful album....picking's singing is subtle and understated but always packs a huge emotional punch. solid songs and lyrics but picking's emotive power and her voice really make the album for me.
