Album Notes
Susanne Heinrich's previous two solo recordings were a huge success: CF Abel 'Mr Abel's Fine Airs' received a Gramophone Award in 2008 and a Diapason d'Or. T Hume 'Passion & Division' (both on Hyperion Records) was selected for a Gramophone Editor's Choice in 2010. This new recording is leaving the conventional tracks and venturing into new territory for the viol. Very little has been changed from the original violin version: BWV1006 is played in DMajor and a few bars were changed in the Chaconne, but other than that it is just the music as we know it, an octave down. Nothing like this has ever been done before on the Viola da Gamba. Susanne Heinrich is living up to a review she received many years ago: 'I can see her bow flying across the strings: the playing of the passagework is reminiscent of a virtuoso violinist'.
