Album Notes

Lake of Sky is the first album composed and arranged by musician Suzanna Reeves on her own label. The music is like a panoramic symphony filled with rich blends of progressive new age, light classical, light blues, and movie soundtrack-style orchestration.

The music is imbued with subtle unique undertones of sounds and a stunning use of electronic and acoustic voice, piano, and other instruments. Suzanna Reeves' music is an exploration of beauty and color with a variety of sounds and soulful original compositions. She takes the listener on an introspective musical journey of the mind and spirit.

Piano & Instruments: Suzanna Reeves
Tree Song is a Piano solo with strings and other electronic orchestration.

A dryad (mythical woodland fey creature) meanders through a darkened wood, encounters, and then mourns a fallen tree. Solace enters the canopy of green as one season passes to another. Drawing upon the resources of life, a new tree begins to grow from the ruins. Life’s cycle continues.

2. Secret Garden
Piano & Voices: Suzanna Reeves
Guitar: Christopher Denton (Paul Heinzman)

3. Lake of Sky
Piano & Instruments: Suzanna Reeves

This composition originated during a time when we had a four month flurry (more like an invasion) of snout-nosed butterflies in South Texas. It was as if millions of them had been awakened from hibernation all at the same time. Like a rain of fluttering wings, they flew across cars, highways, fields, neighborhoods throughout the city, and suburbs. Many never survived the traffic or the eager birds, still millions more headed towards the unknown.

There were theories about why the butterflies manifested themselves, perhaps it had been the severe drought we were having followed by a sudden downpour. or perhaps these specific butterflies only awaken en masse every few decades. Whatever their abundant cause, I think of their glorious multitude as a symbol. The awakening of the inner soul shouldn’t happen like an intermittent drizzle but like a late summer rain, like fields filled with fluttering awakened butterflies.

4. Chansamone
Voice & Instruments: Suzanna Reeves

An eclectic mix of folk and native sounds created from five notes. Chansamone (pronounced: john-sah-moan) is a Laotian word meaning, “Beautiful like the moon.”

This is all the rustling of forests
In the embrace of the breeze
Which breathes this humble hymn
So softly on this mild evening
Of those divine lilies which I gathered
In the garden of your thoughts
May this humble offering
Seem sweet to your lovely eyes

Voices & Instruments: Suzanna Reeves

Rich layered vocals in a piano instrumental setting depict the serenity and romance of a gondola voyage.

6. Canopy of Night
Piano and voices: Suzanna Reeves
Guitar: Christopher Denton (Paul Heinzman)

7. Mountainside
Solo Piano: Suzanna Reeves

This poignant composition was written during a vacation excursion to Big Bear Lake high in the mountains of California. While traveling down the narrow roads that overlook the plunging depths of the mountainside, I was struck with the thought that with so many changes happening, I knew life after this moment was never going to be the same.

8. WOODEN HORSES (Spirit Horses)
A haunting musical allegory of carousel horses longing to be free of their confines and straining to run of their own accord. Wooden Horses is richly and poignantly depicted by piano, angelic vocals, percussion, strings, and guitar.

9. Every Color
Instruments, Piano, and Voices: Suzanna Reeves
Lead Vocals: Mozette Novar
Guitar: Christopher Denton (Paul Heinzman)

10. Eye of my Eyes

Originally written as incidental music for a children’s play entitled ‘Snow Stormia White’, this composition was based on a children’s song written in 1847. The whimsy of waking up, not just with our bodies but with our souls.

“The eyes of my eyes are open...”
--e.e. cummings
