ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This album is a celebration of the sun. At its core are the twelve Surya Namaskar mantras that correspond to the classic twelve-pose yoga sequence most people know as Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation. If you use this form in your own practice, you are tapping into a tradition of sun worship some believe goes as far back as Vedic times.

These Surya Namaskar mantras can be chanted on their own, incorporated into asana practice, or simply listened to. Through them, may you experience the pure joy of mantra and the golden radiance shining from your own great heart.

From the album insert:

The Sun is the source and sustainer of life on Earth, freely offering its warmth and light and asking nothing in return. Without the Sun, this lovely planet would not exist. As I've contemplated the Sun through the many months of creating this album, I've come to see how much I've taken this extraordinary star for granted. How greedily I've received its gifts without a thought of offering thanks.

The Sun shines down on all of us regardless of status and identity. It makes no distinctions of caste, creed, color, or political persuasions. The Sun does not judge. It simply bestows its life-giving light to the entire planet. If unconditional love and selfless service are the two great pillars of spiritual life, then the Sun is our greatest teacher.

The ancient Hindus revered the Sun as the visible form of God. They celebrated its miraculous light with ceremony, sacrifice, and prayer, composing hymns of praise and articulating its aspects in twelve solar deities, the adityas, whose mantras correspond to the twelve poses of Surya Namaskar, the Sun Salutation.

The mantras of the sun carry a potent spark of the Sun. Chanting them silently or out loud is akin to the way solar energy systems collect and store the Sun's light. We absorb their radiance and as our practice deepens, this radiance fuels our innate presence, possibility, and power.

There are numerous ways to work with these mantras. An online search will give you pages of history, commentary, and translations. Rather than relying on outside sources however, I encourage you to simply make friends with these mantras. Chant them alone or in conjunction with your asana practice. Use them as a focus for meditation and contemplation. Create a Sun Salutation playlist and listen to them as you move through your day. Open yourself to the power inherent in these extraordinary mantras. May you become like the sun, offering the light of your presence and warmth of your heart to the world.
