Album Notes
Suzi "Mama" Whaples cherishes her West Virginian heritage, and tells tales inspired by her Appalachian roots. She tailors her programs for any age, or enthralls all ages at once in a family festival atmosphere. She is amazing! Her totally unaffected dialect, her lightning quick wit, and her gentle demeanor make the audience never sure what to expect next: to laugh, shed a tear, or do both at the same time.

Suzi's stories are from her own rich Appalachian heritage and not just another retelling of familiar stories. You'll be right there with her in the hollar, feeling the cool breeze on your cheek, or smelling the cotton candy at the fair. She'll remind you of your own childhood, even if it was totally different from hers. Her love of her friends, family, and heritage are contagious. Her themes are universal. Her telling honest West Virginian. Her humor and compassion obvious. Her work is unique and well crafted. Her enthusiasm and professionalism shine through!

Suzi currently describes herself as a storyteller, humorist, and conference speaker, and has over 30 years experience in teaching, public speaking, and entertainment. Coming from the library world, her love of reading and advocacy of literacy is paramount. She has performed in at least 19 states, and won several regional and national awards. She is currently touring festivals, schools, libraries, etc. , and appeared as a Featured Teller: New Voice at the National Storytelling Festival in October of 2010, Jonesborough, Tennessee.

Mama Whaples is a humorist who blends Appalachian myth, legend, life experiences, and culture together into a captivating performance. She founded an award winning ensemble as a vehicle to impart Appalachian Tales to all before they are lost: The Mountain Women.

Take the next chance you get to hear her tell her tales and see if she doesn't "tickle your funny bone and tug at your heart strings" at the same time.
