ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes

'Swampfish' is an old fashioned alt-country duo from Queensland, Australia. They specialise in songs from the 1920's - 1950's, and originals written in the same genre, as well as a bit of hippy era wondrousness. Comprising guitar, banjo, and autoharp with an emphasis on vocal harmonies, Swampfish play mellow, laid-back, harmonious music, as well as danceable, foot-stomping good-time roots and blues. Swampfish are Liz Hall-Downs and Kim Downs (aka Mary-Raelene Finstelmocker and Travis Pharoah when the banjo makes an appearance).

SWAMPFISH - the short version

They met in Byron Bay in 1992. She was a writer, performance poet and literature major who’d also fronted a few Melbourne punk and folk acts, he was an American expat playing around Byron and surrounds as a solo singer-songwriter and covers band leader. Six months later they shacked up together.
Performance, poetry, publishing and touring in Oz and the USA followed; he published a novel and some poetry, she several poetry collections and a creative writing thesis.
They married in 1994 by the river in Brunswick Heads; it cost $200 and the price of an ad in the Byron Shire Echo urging friends to bring food and champagne. It still rates as one of the most memorable parties of their lives.
They moved north to Brisbane in ’96, hit the poetry scene and then the folk circuit.
Twenty years married, they still think singing and playing together is the most fun a couple can have with their pants on. ‘Homeward Dove’ is their new album – they say ‘it’s not perfect but it ain’t too shabby’.
They hope you’ll buy it!
