Album Notes
The members of Syzygy Ensemble are absolutely thrilled to announce the release of 'Making Signs', our long-awaited debut CD! This recording has been a special project in so many ways and we are so proud to finally share the results with you. It marks the intersection of many fields of Australian talent and brings together several strands of local artistic excellence.

Firstly, the music itself – all of it by Australian composers, and two of the five works composed especially for Syzygy. Gordon Kerry (composer of the title track) and Brenton Broadstock have contributed works which Syzygy has had the honour of premiering; Annie Hui Hsin Hsieh and Katy Abbott have provided dark, brooding miniatures; and the ensemble is especially excited to present the first studio recording of Brett Dean’s devilishly tricky sextet, Old Kings in Exile, composed in 2010.

Secondly, the production aesthetic created by our dream team of producer Stephen Snelleman and sound engineer Jim Atkins. With a wealth of experience and a swag of awards including multiple ARIA's to their credit, these two fine gentlemen have captured a luminous sound world that reflects the energy and detail of these stunning works.

We are deeply grateful to Australian artist Heather Betts, who has given us permission to use as cover art her striking work Consensus, which featured in her 2008 ‘Music in Your Head’ exhibition. Complimenting the booklet artwork is an extended reflection on the pieces by our wonderful pianist Dr Leigh Harrold, written in the same informal, chatty style that audiences have come to know and love at our live concerts.

And finally, the musicians – Laila Engle, Robin Henry, Jenny Khafagi, Blair Harris, Leigh Harrold, and guest percussionist Dan Richardson. This CD marks the culmination of years working together and is an ecstatic celebration of the vibrancy and diversity of local contemporary music in Australia.
