ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The third CD from guitarist Denis Taaffe Modern rock guitar Volume . III is completed!!!! the CD includes 11 instrumental tracks with a running time of approximately 72 minutes. The tracks range from all out rock tracks with guitar as a the focus to more atmospheric ambient pieces, but for the most part it is an upbeat rock CD.

Continuing in his experimental improvised solo electric guitar style, which is quite unique, All the tracks on the CD are improvised on the spot and were recorded live with no overdubs, using one guitar and guitar loops done on the fly. In fact, the only non guitar generated sounds on the CD are the drum programs which were done live and on the fly as well. All the sounds including bass sounds and synth type sounds and that of other instruments were created live with guitar and its all analog, no guitar synthesizers, were used. This makes this type of recording quite experimental and risky as not only does Denis improvise during the songs, but the songs are improvised on the spot as well and it is recorded live. So, what you hear on the recording is exactly what you would have heard if you were in the studio room when it was created and recorded.

The sounds are generated via the use of analog processing of the guitar signal including using reverbs, delays, octave pitch shifters, looping processors and other gear creatively. For more on Denis's setup, see the diagram here. Denis spent a lot of time, experimenting and exploiting the equipment used to create the music to its limits. The music is a creative process that is unfortunately a reflection of the limitations of the equipment being used. Still, the result is a truly unique music bordering on a new style that is not easily categorized and that is created by one guitar and as a result Denis can play the material live as well as live in the studio as this recording will show. While it is not conventional by any means, Denis truly believes in this style of solo improvised electric guitar and is committed to it.

The recordings on this CD are a culmination of sifting through quite a few live recordings done in his home studio. While Denis has200+ unreleased tracks going back several years, he wanted to choose form the latest tracks recorded as he as Denis is always experimenting and adding to and fine tuning his sound, so he wanted the most recent tracks recorded as they are a reflection of what he sounds like now. All the tracks on the Cd were recorded within this year, with the most recent being recorded a month ago. Those recordings of this past year were about 63 total tracks and those were narrowed down to 24 tracks and from those the best 11 were selected for the CD. The tracks were chosen for the performance first, feel & mood second and sound quality third.

On 1 track in particular, the performance was very good but the recording technically had problems in that when it was recorded, one of the generated sounds was extremely low (similar to a fog horn). the low sound at its peak made the speaker break up which was captured on the recording giving it an almost growling effect, however it is very brief. However, it does fit the song quite well as it is called 'Dark Sky' and captures the mood quite well, though it is not absolutely perfect sound quality wise, it did not detract from the recording and performance and in a way was a fittingly pleasant surprise. So in those cases, the performance was the most important factor even though is it s technically flawed a bit recording wise. Again dealing with the limitations of the equipment.

Denis also really focused on the guitar performance, drum sounds which are a huge improvement over the first and second CD which were always limitations of those recordings. Denis used several drum machines in conjunctions with each other to find just the right balance. Denis also concentrated on trying to get a really clean sound quality wise. The last CD had many more flaws recording quality wise, where as this CD is much more polished. Denis has improved in his guitar playing compared to the last CD and it shows. The leads are much more polished and a definite style is being developed. Also, attention to phrasing and melody are heard.

Denis was truly inspired and influenced by the events of the past year in the people he met and the musical situations he found himself in and it is reflected in his playing and truly changed his life, guitar playing and approach to music for the better. His solos are more melodic and well placed than in the past. You never know from where inspiration will come and how it can affect you. Denis had to really go through many changes because of this and they were for the better and his music changed and best of all he really came into his own as far as his guitar playing is concerned. Many tough choices, both personal and professional had to be made and they were tough choices to make and some are regretful and very emotional. But again, this is reflected in Denis's music and in the end music is pure emotion. This CD is a culmination of the events of the last year and really capture the musical growth Denis has gone through. The musical style has evolved from the second CD to this release and a truly unique sound and style develops from it.

"Well, I have some people in particular to thank for their inspiration and they really motivated me and they know who they are and I do feel that I will always be indebted to them for these things, always. I do think that at times, people come into your life and have a deep impact on you, however briefly and have really positive affects on your life and then they are gone. It is sometimes hard to let go of that, however we each must choose the path which we want to follow in life's journey and you have to believe that things happen for a reason. This CD is a reflection of the past year and what is has meant and done for me musically and personally as well. I do think it was a period of real growth, sorrow and happiness as well, but isn't life like that sometimes. As a result of the events of the past year, I became so very focused on the emotional aspects of music and that is sometimes a difficult thing to face and contend with and in the end it helped me to face and deal with my own emotions and to really be open in that respect with others and myself and that is really a magical thing and it is reflected in my music as well.

So this is a CD I am really proud of as it is a really huge step in developing this improvised solo electric guitar style I have been working on for several years now and I am very pleased with the results and this CD is like a fulfillment of a promise of what I had envisioned with this style. It shows me that it can be done and it is a style which I believed in when others were quite skeptical, so I am very proud of it and pleased with the results.

Also playing different styles with people really expanded my musical tastes and gave me appreciation for music styles that was not accustomed too and this helped me to really incorporate this into my music and it does indirectly influence my guitar playing at times.

I think overall, I really learned that life is emotional and is all about emotions, for others, for yourself and that music is just that, emotions, which is why then that a particular song would move you or create a mood or atmosphere. So it isn't just about playing guitar which you can do all day, noodling away, but it is when you are creating music, that then it is all about pure emotions and when it all comes together and clicks, there is nothing like it. I think this happened for me in creating these recordings.... " Denis states..

Besides doing the recordings, Denis also mixed and mastered the CD on his own!! Denis, brought up the levels, added compression and eq'd each track adding a polished shine to each track. Denis had others master his first and second CD's so this is a first and he is thrilled with the results sound quality wise. In addition, Spin Digital, the Cd manufacturers in Canada will re-sequence the songs and add any additional mastering or tweaking that might be needed.

Overall, this CD is what Denis had been trying to achieve with this experimental solo electric guitar style, so he is absolutely thrilled with the results and it is his best work to date by far. The official release date was September 23rd,2002 and it is available now!!!
