With vibrant characters, powerful story, and provocative imagery, Kentucky Curdled is a poetic sequence unveiling the story of a tragedy in a small rural community. Each of the persona poems is a character (human or other) that shares his reflections and responses to the death of a young community member. The story is timely and contemporary raising questions of how to make peace in times of senseless crime and violence, often without the luxury of answers and "justice."

Kentucky Curdled is the perfect blend of poetry, spoken word, performance, and audio book making it enticing for poetry, fiction and spoken word audiences. This is Tamara J. Madison's long awaited second solo offering showcasing her skills as author, poet, and performer.

WRITER’S STATEMENT: "This project grew creatively from a family story that was shared with me many years ago. Kentucky Curdled is my offering to create a sacred space for many to mourn and celebrate the lives and the challenges of those who came before us, suffered and survived that we might arrive. It is also my effort to extract and nurture healing, love and beauty from the otherwise horrific.

"Many thanks to New England College for the workshop start on this sequence. Special thanks to Kaba, Ilya, Sage, Sulonda, Allajuah, Ajeemah, Tonya, IKE BOOGIE, Key Recording, And/Or Magazine, bill, aaduna, and Lynwoodt (RIP) for believing in me and supporting me out on a limb with this work. Auntie, I am honored and humbled that you entrusted this family story to me."

NOTE: For poetry lovers and students of poetry, Kentucky Curdled will also be available in print complete with the poet’s essay, “Obsessing Sequence: The Making of Kentucky Curdled” and other personal notes regarding the collection. For more information and release of the publication please refer to Tamara’s website.

Tamara has always captured the essence of an event by hypnotizing her audience with incantation, chant, and song. She shares story in lullaby forms that moves the soul to cadence of steady heartbeats. I just love listening, feeling, and being present when she reads. Its like receiving a blessing!

Kentucky Curdled, By Tamara J. Madison
Tamara J. Madison has created a phenomenal CD Kentucky Curdled. Its words and images jump off the page. All reminiscent of ancestral memory and the comfort of grandma’s quilts. Treasured quilts pasted from generation to generation, bearing family truth, folklore, and secrets. Madison’s poems are life filled, leaving no emotion untouched. Poems weaved as stories. All told in a passionate uncompromising voice. Madison’s characters are all persons we know. Family and friends we have sat with on front porches and stoops, where community gather on cool summer nights. Poems planting us until daylight.
Madison’s poems are weaved together with great care and abandon. Transporting us to rich black and red soil. Clearly spirit and heart speaking, creating its own life gumbo. Her usage of language and phrasing is authentically hers. For example, the words “she walked toe heavy.” We know this walk! This is an example of the powerful and beautiful language you will experience while listening to this CD. This talented writer has only touched the surface of her gifts. We can expect more great works!

A Healing History
Every bloodline has its secrets and its silent spaces. Here Tamara Madison uses “moth-gnawed memory” to fill in the gaps of a story that has loomed in the corners of her family lore. In Kentucky Curdled, readers are introduced to characters beset by problems similar to those in Toni Morrison’s Beloved or Anne Rice’s Feast of All Saints, namely a relative known as Rachel who is guilty of committing horrific crimes against her children. Through her vocal artistry, Tamara shines light on a dark family story and tries to make sense of it. Through these sketches we witness how exercising such courage has the power to lay old ghosts to rest.
