Album Notes
This album, Ballades & Ballads, as close to the meaning of the words, is a narrative of endearing and intriguing musical poetry and sentimental love songs. The term, Ballade describes a kind of poetic composition that had found particular favor in Germany at the close of the eighteenth century, with the verses of Goethe and Schiller appearing in the famous Balladenjahr of 1797. After that, the Ballade continued to hold the romantic imagination as a re-creation of the primitive narrative verse of an earlier age, particularly that of the Scottish borders. Chopin was largely responsible for the creation of the Ballade for piano. These have directly influenced composers such as Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Edvard Grieg, and later, Claude Debussy, Enrique Granados and Manuel Ponce, who wrote Ballades of their own. The beautiful cover art by childhood friend, Caleb Woo (吳加里) represents images in my memories and imagination. I draw inspiration and sustenance from these images: the Lion Rock Hill (獅子山) in Hong Kong where I grew up, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, my present home, and the painting, “View of Warsaw from the Royal Castle” by Bernardo Bellotto, il Canaletto (1721-1780). The pieces in this album have suggested extra-musical influences from poetry, song lyrics, and in one case, a dream.
